I think my favorite from back in the day was Phantasy Star II. Epic ending, aweseome last stand, and all of your characters die in a climactic last battle. Good stuff.

For more modern games, I'd have to say Metal Gear Solid 3. Crazy long, deep, thought provoking, and the death of The Boss was just an awesome, tragic bitter-sweet way to end the best game in the series.

As for worst, Karnov on the NES. Hours of tough slogging for a black screen with 'Congrabulation'.

I love the ending to Metroid. Also love the ending for Pitfall II-Atari 5200 version.

Also I actually love the ending to Super Mario Bros 2....I thought it was cool that it was all a dream Mario had. Back in 1988 that ending was awesome.

My most favorite ending has to be Chun Li's ending in Street Fighter 2 the original arcade version. As far as the worst ending I've seen, probably Revenge of Shinobi. I felt there should have been more.

I think one of the best out of my collection was Willow for the NES. It brought some nice closure to the game's story, and the music was quite nice for an ending theme. One of the best "Zelda" clones ever made in my opinion.

Yes, I'd like to change my selection for best ending from the end of 2600 Adventure to Chun-li ending instead (but she really should keep the Qipao on in my opinon)

Worst by far is karnov. That was one brutal game and had with the most bs ending ever.

The most emotional ending for me was halo reach, noble six was a bad ass mofo to the end.

Dragon warrior may have been my fav, because you could go evil and end the game.

Now that you mention it, Halo: Reach did have a great ending. I've played through the campaign a couple of times and always loved how it ended.

But the game I was originally going to mention for best ending: Kameo: Elements of Power. I absolutely love that ending. The musical score that accompanies the scene after the final battle is simply epic, and it really ties together everything that's happening on-screen. I played through the game a second time for no other reason that to see the ending again (even though I did indeed enjoy the game). I really wish that game had a 'theatre' option form the main menu.

The best:
Snatcher on the Sega CD. It was 40 min long fully voiced and nicely animated. The game had such a great story and the ending tied it up nicely.

Rastan on the Master System. It was one of the first games I had ever played with a ,at the time, long ending wrapping up the story.

The Worst:
Shinobi on the Master System. I loved the game but after all that practice to get good at it you only see GAME OVER-sucked

Psycho Fox on the Master System. Long game and you get to the end to see a pink screen with all the differnt characters sitting in front of some japanese building and a little tune-Lame

not necessarily a crap ending, but how's about the genny Sonic games. you go through all that trouble and happen to miss even one Chaos Emerald. it's like, "i just defeated you, Robotnik, so your fat ass shouldn't be juggling what i obviously missed like a damn clown laughing at me."

Rather typcail, actully. Robotnic's a a cartoon villian, and cartoon villians always survive for another round.

Actually one of my favorite endings is Sonic 2's. That was one of the first games "finite" games I beat, after hacking away for over two hours. Sitting back and watching the ending while jacked up on adrenaline is one of my fondest video game memories. It doesn't hurt that the ending was well done even without the surrounding context.

Portal 2 has another good ending, surprisingly bittersweet for all the characters involved, even the ones you thought were just plain evil.

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't really finished a whole lot of games to rack up a list of bad endings.

How about the ending of Alex Kidd in Hi-Tech World for the Sega Master System? When you finally made it to the end of the game, you just get a shot of Alex Kidd playing a sit-down machine of Outrun and text reading "Prince Alex's adventure is over. Maybe you will meet him again someday."

That's a quest game with a time limit on it and many instant deaths (or endings). When you beat the game...that's the reward you get?!

And I have to admit, I don't quite understand games like Pac-Man that have no ending and just go on forever where the only goal is amassing "points". I need a reward.
heh.. must be a yung un' ;) But I hear what you're saying.

Quote

1. Super Mario Bros. 2. I wish my memories of this ending were just a dream.

Lots of people say this.. but to me it was a very well done and satifsying ending to the game in an age when video games actually ending was still a new and novel idea (at least to me). I don't know what there is not to like.. it's a big ol semi-animated picture of Mario sleeping and snoring with appropriate music. And big ol animated pictures were great in the NES days.

Worst:

Ghosts 'n Goblins
This.

The first time you beat finish the game, it was all a dream and it reverts you back to the beginning. After beating the game a second time, you are treated to a final stage of hell (keep in mind this game is hard and unfair) upon which you get the ending: "CONGRATURATION! THIS GAME IS HAPPY END! THANK YOU."

And then it asks you to challenge it again. From the beginning. The FIRST beginning. Lets just say I hate this game so much I love it.
