But the cross on your Lynx 1 still sits on a circular base. It seems to me that it's just the cross itself that is coloured differently, but that the behaviour of the d-pad is the same.

I have the exact one in this picture:

I've opened up my Lynx and know the parts well, the D-pad is definitely fully-black, cross-shaped and protrudes through a cross-shaped cut-out in the front of the dark-grey case. Don't believe me if you don't want to though, see if I care.

Then the circle on your model is just for decoration? How odd. I've never seen this model and didn't know they existed. Are these the originals, or is mine the original? Which is more common?

I wonder if it plays better or worse than mine. Has anyone tried both?

Why did Atari change the D-pad?

I've seen people comment that the Lynx II had an improved D-pad, and they were comparing it to the circular-based D-pad on the Lynx I, so I'm guessing my model might be a later revision of the original, just before the Lynx II came out. The original box mine came in has a photo of a circular-based D-pad Lynx I on it rather than the one it contained. Mine was made in Taiwan, where was yours made? I definitely prefer this D-pad over the Lynx II one, it has more roll and is easier to hit diagonals. With my small hands though I prefer to hold the Lynx II.

Mine says Made in Japan. This is the only Lynx I've tried. My box has a picture of the circular based d-pad, but the pad and buttons are coloured much darker in the picture. My actual Lynx has the pad and buttons coloured the same grey as the casing.

The circular D-pad is quite good. It has a nice springy bounce to it, good accuracy, easy diagonals. Maybe not quite an SNES pad, but still good nonetheless. Maybe it's the reason I get such awesome scores in BMX. :P

I wonder why they changed the design.

Well all the cool kids have the 8-way circle. :P And those black buttons are hideous.

It sure doesn't seem to help out your BMX scores. :P

Wish I could try it though. It would be interesting to know why Atari changed it.

You're very lucky that your Lynx held up over all the years. My first Lynx held up well until I went to college. Then, it went into my brother's hands, where it stayed in his dark, cool, and probably a little damp basement for several years. When I got it out to see how it was, the screen had tons of dead pixels all over it. I'm pretty sure that I had seen it's perfect, dead-pixel-free screen about 10 years ago, but being in such a place for that amount of time wreaked havoc on it.

I've since acquired a few different Lynxes from other sellers recently, and I am making sure to take good care of them. They all stay in either an official Lynx carrying case or else wrapped in dry cloth, and they are stored in warm and dry places.

Every one of them is a Lynx II.

What are you going to do with all your Lynxes? Do you have ComLynx cables so you can link them up and get some friends over to play together?

Well, out of all the people I know, there's only one whom I might be able to get to play the Lynx with me someday, but he already owns a Lynx II. I got each Lynx for "dirt cheap" as part of lots with games that I didn't have at the time of purchase. The deals were really incredible. I essentially got free Lynxes along with the very inexpensive games that I didn't own at the time. Thus, I may just sell a couple of these Lynxes for dirt cheap someday. But for now, I am simply using one and keeping the others stored safely, in case something goes wrong with the one I use all the time. I like having the extra Lynxes as "backups" in the event that the unexpected happens.
