I won a Sega Genesis for $1.04 early Friday morning.

He sent this email to me after I won the item:

Quote

holy crap. lol. you won it for 1.04. lmao. cool. I am a man of my word. I will refund your money. shipping was 15.00 plus 1.04= 16.04. Ebay and paypal will take 11.9% +.3 of that total value which is 3.25 total for you meaning i will refund you $12.79. Is there another way to do it other than that? You can call me my number is nnn.nnn.nnnn

I called him up and I was like what are you talking about all I have to do is give you cash and we're done.

The seller is local to me and he keeps making a big deal out of me paying cash for the system and saying "how will eBay know that the transaction took place?"

I've bought a bunch of arcade cabinets off of eBay and paid cash for every one of them. I don't get what the big deal is.

I called him twice: once yesterday afternoon and today. Both times he mentioned the "how will eBay know that the transaction took place" spiel and says he'll call me back because he was out somewhere but never does.

What do you guys think I should do?

If he does not like the winning bids he should set a minimum amount. Bullshit he is trying to brush it off pretending it's A-ok to just give back your $$$$$, he is as obligated to sell as you would be to buy if he got the amount he wanted right?

The seller can check the 'mark item paid' option and you can check the 'mark as payment sent' option. eBay will honor this. I've paid cash many times from local sellers. That's why the 'local pick up' option is there - and usually sellers will mark that as free. This dirt bag just wants to back out because it didn't sell for what he wanted (that's why you can set the minimum bid, dummy). He probably purchased it for $5 at a local thrift store and hoped it would go for more than that - and he lost out. Sometimes it happens that way, but as a seller you have to honor the purchase price (at least honest sellers do). Good luck with that. You can report him to ebay if he continues to try and back out as ebay protects the buyers and not the sellers. What a maroon.

I had a similar situation for an ADAM Computer a couple years ago. My winning bid was something like $20.00 and the seller had shipping cost listed as something like $15.00. As a lot of us know, shipping an ADAM Computer can run upwards of $50, so the guy never sent the system and wouldn't respond to my messages. Suffice it to say that I filed a claim with eBay and got my money refunded in very short order. It seems like you will have to do the same.

As far as paying cash and picking up directly from the seller, there is no issue there as you know, and all the seller has to do is mark as paid through his eBay account.

Can't stand people like this!

I'm trying to decipher what he's talking about. If I read it right, he has no idea how ebay or paypal works, because he could refund the money and cancel the transaction on ebay to get rid of the fees. Otherwise, you'll be out around $3 and he won't make any money.

And like jtoubeaux said, he can mark the item as paid and you guys can do the cash deal. ebay doesn't discourage local pick-up (it's still an option the last time I checked)

And if you're local, how is shipping a genny $15???

It's not. That's likely a big reason it only went for a buck, people shyed away from it because of the shipping. Unless it's boxed, and shipping priority (and even then) he's charging close to double. Not surprising he's pulling some dishones stunt on the back end.

I would just make him send it, since he is apparently trying to make you pay his fees for him.

I have paid peanuts for stuff locally before. I bought some 2600 games for 78 cents once and the seller was cool about it. I gave him a buck and said to keep the change. He was asking like $10 shipping so no one else bid.

The funny thing is that a Genesis is worth about $1.04 these days. I know I would not pay to have one shipped.

The buyer was cool, said they felt bad and sent me a couple extra bucks!

I'd tell the seller tough shit. I once sold a lego monorail on ebay that went for a lot less then I was expecting. The last couple I'd seen sell sold for $200-300 in identical condition and completeness. Mine went for $126. I manned up and shipped it out without one complainet, so yeah tough shit to him.

You know what , If I bought something and the seller had sellers remorse I would be ok with that. As long as they were honest about it.

I logon to eBay just now and I see this:

Item: Sega Genesis Black Console American NTSC
Transaction end: Jan-19-2012

Case type: Cancel transaction
has sent you a request to cancel this transaction.
Seller selected the following reason: Buyer purchased item by mistake or changed mind.
Additional information from seller: Accidentally bought?

If I accept this cancellation, will my feedback be ruined?

I agree. Don't accept it. The seller certainly expected quite a bit more than you won it for and, once he realized that you were interesting in picking it up locally, realized that he was not going to be able to make anything on shipping. If he doesn't want to sell it, you should let him know that HE will take the negative feedback and HE will be reported to ebay. This is the kind of auction that I used to like Ebay for. The occasional good, or even great, deal. Nowadays, between the specualtion, overpriced shipping and "its old so its worth a fortune" attitude....you can keep it.

Hold his feet to the fire. All you did was bid on, and win, a Genesis.

Bob

He doesn't have to allow pickup (although he should have mentioned that in description and/or removed that option from the listing).

Yes, unfortunately you are correct. I agree, hold this clown responsible if you can. You can also send the $1.04 ONLY and then ask him where he would like to meet to arrange pick up. Then, when he does not show up, you can leave neg feedback because you did pay for it. You can then also report him to ebay and paypal and get your refund. :-D

While the seller is a jackass for not knowing how the system works, from his perspective, He's going "ef that guy, I'll take the hit, I still have the Genesis and I'll sell it later".

I have actually had this problem myself, with arcade cabinets. Basically I get nervous when somebody pays for something with paypal and then does a local pick-up, in the event of a paypal claim they very well could when since Ebay has no record of the transaction and I could not prove it because nothing was shipped. From this point on I have asked that a note is made in the paypal message area that item is to be picked up locally and not shipped. It's something to protect me a little if somebody decides they want to say they never picked up the $xxxx pinball machine and paypal ends up deciding in there favor (which could very well happen with paypals reputation) Now, in your case it's a little silly because it's a $1.04 item BUT you can use my explination to him to possibly change his mind?

Yeah, the message in the paypal note will work just fine. There are plenty of ways to show that the item was picked up and not shipped; however, I do not believe that the seller is truly interested in making sure that ebay and paypal know the item was delivered. He's just butt hurt that his Genesis didn't sell for more than he thought it would and he's trying to call the wambulance to back out. Completely irresponsible and selfish. Give that man his Genny for $1.04 you nerf herder!

Well, I picked up the item earlier today. Pay $1.05 in cash and despite the fact that I told him repeatedly all he had to do was mark it payment received he kept going on and I was like "whatever."

I declined the sale cancellation and noted "that I paid for and picked up the item locally"..then I get this from the jackass:

Quote

Sorry man. Since you rejected the cancellation offer i am being charged by ebay for the final value fees of the amount invoiced with the sale price. Since you only paid 1.05. $14.99 is the difference.

Ha! What a jackass!

Now, question is can eBay bilk my Paypal account for this?

He'd be luck to get $1.04 again if indeed he pu$$es out on the original auction sale and tries to auction it off again. Keep us informed, rmaerz, if the transaction goes sour and then we can watch for him to list the Genny again and then report him... if that will do any good.

ED: just saw your latest posting, glad to hear you got the system and hopefully it is working properly considering all the B.S. you had to go through to get it.

He called me up to complain about my declining the transaction cancellation and as a result he was $2.89 in the red from eBay transaction fees.

On top of all this, the console doesn't work. There's a reason there were no controllers included - the controller ports are bad.

In any event, I wound up paying $1.05 for Mortal Kombat, three other carts and a headache of a seller.

Lesson learned for him: Know how eBay works.

I'm no fan of how eBay treats sellers these days, but this dude made his own bed. Don't feel bad.
