FYI to everyone here who joins us in IRC (or who has always wanted to) - we are no longer using newnet.net as our main contact point. This is due to a number of stability and other issues over a number of months, and it seems like a good time to move. We've listened to folks' suggestions and are now on freenode in channel ##atari. Yes, 2 hashes for the channel name, per freenode's guidelines. So, you have at least a couple ways to get there, and I bet Sloopy will follow up with more:

Connect your favorite IRC client to chat.freenode.net and join channel ##atari.
Telnet to irc.atarichat.net, port 800. This is the same as before, and it will now put you in the freenode channel.

Hope to see all you regs and some new folks there soon! Any questions, feel free to send me a PM.

thanks
James

freenode is a predefined server in xchat standard config, so just have to connect to freenode and then /join ##Atari...

Yeah, same with many IRC clients. In MIRC, for example, it's as easy as selecting from the menu as well or simply typing "/server freenode" in your first window to connect (and of course add ##Atari to your auto-join list :)). Thanks sloop.

Awesome, thanks for bringing the channel to my attention, I already hang out on Freenode so I'll drop by and see if I can fit in.

Sloopy figured out a direct link for the web-based interface to the channel:

Can this IRC also be reached through telnet? I like to get there with ICE-T on my Atari 8bit.

I never saw the telnet gateway posted in public before (which doesn't mean it never was) but I PM-ed you the url.

@fox-1 thanks a lot!

I already found it. It is the known url, but the portnumber was added to it.

Thanks again!

So, for telnet, you have two options now:

#1: telnet://irc.atarichat.net:800
This one is for anyone running a VT100-capable terminal (Ice-T falls into that category).

#2: telnet://irc.atarichat.net:400
This is a simple, ascii-only interface to the same channel, for use with a wider array of terminals. Still being tested, so let me know if you see any issues.

Or the web interface is can be gotten to at http://urql.com/atari@irc.
And, of course, the main IRC is irc://chat.freenode.net.
