Apparently we've taken a long enough break from World War II games to be able to enjoy them again. That's the word from Steve Hart, a developer at Rebellion, the chaps who created Alien vs. Predator, the upcoming Neverdead, and who are currently working on Sniper Elite V2.

We're no longer drowning on brown and grey, mud-encrusted WWII shooters like we were a few years ago. Instead we're drowning on brown and orange, sand-caked modern military shooters. But is the best course of action really to jump back to the '40s, in the same way that we jumped to the modern era to get away from the '40s in the first place?

But we really could do with coming up with a better approach to the FPS genre than another chronological knee-jerk, before another fad-wave starts to build.
Like, you know, just not doing the whole me-too thing at all, and coming up with fresh, creative ideas.

Nah, what am I saying? That'll never catch on.

i'm not going to bag on sniper elite but if i see a wave of the tired beyond tired ww2 games on store shelves i'm going to scream. holy christ, is the industry so creatively bankrupt that they think we need more shooters, especially ones set in ww2?

i trip over creative ideas in tv, movies and books. why is gaming so empty of inspiration? close the history books, turn off the iraq war footage and crack open a science fiction fiction or fantasy novel before you design your game. how someone can be satisfied with creating a "me too" product, i'll never know.

Even Indiana Jones couldn't battle Nazis forever.

The one good thing about generic space-marine shooters is that they're not brown. Well, most of them aren't...

Why not an assassin-based fps? Run around a city filled with NPC's trying to identify and take out specific human players. Points lost for killing the wrong person. Now that's unique.

Skylanders successfully combined real world collectibles and video games. I thought that was pretty unique and loved it. I don't believe brown or grey is even a color in the game.

Dead Island took zombies and put them in an open world to mainly favorable reviews. Takes place on a lush tropical vacation island. Good times.

Bio Shock, lots of fun and lots of color.

Borderlands, cell shaded colorful goodness, I use the Siren decked out in red and black garb, when I spawn a vehicle for her, it's always her favorite color...pink!!

Crysis 2 an amazing FPS that isn't brown or grey, and feature extreme sci-fi elements.

How about Kinect games (Child of Eden, Leela, Sonic Free Riders, etc...) Do any Kinect games even contain the color grey?

I dunno, you stop focusing on war games and a whole new world opens up. They do sell like mad though so they aren't going away. Doesn't matter what era they are in, I pretty much ignore them only because I still have a backlog of them from previous years and I refuse to buy another till I play what I have, and the list already includes WWII settings!! Take my advice, ignore them as well and you'll see there other plenty of other games to play. It's obvious millions dig the genre. Why not let them play what makes them happy and just be glad there's something for everyone?

I look forward to a WW2 game, because back then they had all that cool stuff like M1 Garand, MG42, PPSh-41, P-51 Mustang, Mitsubishi Zero, Focke-Wulf 190 and so on. The last ego shooter I played was Duke Nukem 3D... :D

I think its time shooters shifted to a different time period, I'm very tired of modern military shooters because they all look and feel the same. There is a whole world they could use for insperation but they always take the easy way out and go for the middle east or south east Asia, yawn. For pete sake make an alternate history game or something! Have Canada invade Turkey or France pull a Germany and start major shit with the rest of Europe but please enough with the vague generic terrorists!

I'd personally like to see a return to WW2 shooters, there is so much ground to cover that they could easily break away from the typical call of duty medal of honor fare. Why not make a game where you play a member of the French resistance or cover another aspect of the war thats never been made into a game. I remember reading an article once about a guerilla group in either Czechoslovakia or Poland that built their own armored car in secret and used it to cause serious damage to the Nazi's in their country through out the war, they did so well that they were never caught and their vehicle now rests in a museum. Why not cover their exploits?

Or how about they start making games that cover other wars? There haven't been that many(compared to modern and WW2 shooters) that covered the Vietnam war and I've never heard of one that covered Korea. How about one that deals with the blood bath that was WWI or many other countless wars or sides to wars we never see?

Well, there was The Saboteur... didn't sell too well. It was a neat idea, though, and could probably be done more successfully. Of course, that probably means "make it more like Call of Duty".

I think here-in lies another problem. Other people try to make unique FPS's that have little to do with realistic war and they sell like crap.
Some because they are bad games (Darkest of Days), others because they aren't Call of Duty. LOL

Bulletstorm should be the #1 example here.

How about a Civil War shooter, with blunderbusses that shoot "more or less" in front of you?

Been done... multiple times.
History Channel Civil War : A Nation Divided and History Channel Civil War : Secret Wars.
They weren't terrible games either I didn't think, a tad slow maybe as I would think should be expected.
They did however, go over about as well as a fart in church, that is to say, not very well, while Call of Duty was selling millions on day one. (Is anyone seriously surprised game developers play "me too"?)
They are still available for people who want something other than the latest war FPS though.

Any game where firing 3 rounds a minute is realistic isn't going to be popular.

I also enjoyed both History Channel: Civil War games and still need to complete Secret War's. I found it a nice change of pace for an FPS to not be able to fire 60 rounds a second and having to take into consideration reloading times when in battle. It was also a nice touch to see factual background information and history on the battle you were about to take part in.

I was actually surprised when Secret War's was released as the first game was not a top seller so i never expected a sequel would appear.

I'd like to see some alternate reality WWII type games. Where maybe the war continued into more modern times and maybe the Nazis are still around and we're still fighting them with more modern fictional weapons based on and styled to look like WWII weapons. Kind of like Resistance but without the alien-ish thing going on.

I really wish more games like this would be made, Turning Point Fall of liberty is the only one I know of and have played... it stands as the worst game I've ever played. The burger king games are game of the year material by comparision. TPFL was so bad that when I rented it I took it back and demanded a refund the same day, it was absolutely dreadful and uncontrolable!
