I always make sure to check for who sent the first PM vs who posted 'PM sent' first. I go by who contacts me first or posts first, but that's just me.

I usually post " PM sent" but see nothing wrong with not doing so.
It doesn't mean that you purchased the item. Your offer could easily be a low offer and my offer could be for the asking price. Some buyers may not anyone to know that they purchased or sent an offer on an item. If the seller wants it this way then it should be stated as so.

I've been on a lot of forums over the past few years, related to other hobbies as well, and the other marketplace forums are far more regulated and moderated than this one, with far more rules. Despite all that, I've done more transactions on AA than on the other sites, yet have never had an issue here. Everything has always gone smooth and trouble-free. I attribute that partially to the higher quality of people here than average, and also the fact that if anything looks stupid, suspicious, or just not worth dealing with in an ad ("best offer" ads are usually counted in this, but not always), then I just don't deal with them. Also, I check the user feedback section first, and if anything is awry, I avoid.

Bottom line, this is a great marketplace/site, with great members overall.

I wholeheartedly agree that a "PM Sent" is a nice thing. However, you can't mandate courtesy. If you desire some delicious item you see on the forum and someone else sent the seller a PM earlier than you......or maybe for $10 more than you offered, and 10 minutes later..... Who is going to blame the seller?

The real dishonesty is when a sh*tbag seller screws someone big-time, and this complaint about "PM Sent" [or not] is not even close to being tantamount to fraud. It can be dick-ish, as when you contact a seller and they're too pussy to tell you that they want more......then silently wait for it and eventually get it. Show some BALLS, sellers, and if someone lowballs you, TELL THEM.

But as a BUYER, you really don't have a complaint until someone takes your money and f**ks you on the deal. Anything less is merely a minor irritant, which can be avoided by shopping heavily-moderated/controlled venues, as have been discussed earlier in this thread. I'd suggest Ebay - the most heavily "moderated" of them all!!!!

Only thing I could ever suggest is that prices & pictures must be listed for all things you have for sale in your thread. I find that is the norm
and expected at most other forums I participate in that have a marketplace be it for computers, action figures or video games.

It'd be nice if people would fill out their wherabouts too, but there's another horse that's been beaten to death.

I definitely think sellers have an obligation to edit their sale threads in a timely manner, especially to reflect pending and sold items. As soon as I receive payment for something, I mark it with a strikethrough and write "SOLD" next to it, and I'll usually mark an item "PENDING" as soon as I get an offer unless the buyer seems ambivalent, erratic, or otherwise likely to drop out.

As for "PM sent", I appreciate it as a bump from a seller's perspective. I'll occasionally use it as a buyer if I'm especially interested in an item, think it's going to go fast, or want to give a free bump to a good seller. Generally speaking, though, I'm not too bothered about it one way or another.

BTW that "PMS ent" gave me a good laugh. It's the second-best ent-related joke I've ever heard -- which somehow makes me think of the description of 32X Kolibri as "arguably the finest hummingbird based shooter on the 32X".

(The first-best ent-related joke I've heard was from a list of ways to mess with people at a showing of the LOTR movies. #11 was: in The Two Towers when the Ents decide to march to war, stand up and yell "RUN, FOREST, RUN!!!")

This entire conversation was had not 6 months ago and everyone seemed to be of a different opinion then. Everyone likes the idea when they lose out on something, no one cares when they aren't involved in the deal.

I don't list much here (as I'm a collector and not a reseller I only have the left overs to sell) but when I do there are always people sending low ball offers that I never see post anywhere. There is a group of people that come through this forum that never post anything, they just send an offer on everything that says "make an offer".

The "PM sent" arguement has come and gone. Its something I used to do but in the wake of the last thread about this I just can't see the point. Infact what happened to me last time I did is more then enough reason to stay away from that. I post that "PM sent" tag and the next person in line just sent in a PM for more money to jack it out from under me. If I had kept my "PM sent" message to myself the other member wouldn't have known to offer more, and I would own that game now... just saying.

I'm not going to read this whole thread because frankly I don't really care, but in response to the OP, just because a PM was sent, that doesn't mean that there is a sale pending. I don't really see why someone has to post "PM sent", anyway. If you're interested in something, and the seller hasn't listed it as sold, then just PM them.

The only gripe I have with marketplace ettiquette is people not pricing their stuff. On a non-gaming forum that I frequent, you aren't allowed to list stuff for sale without a price. If you don't know what it's worth, you can ask in their appraisal sub-forum, but once it goes in the marketplace, it has to have a price on it. I am a huge fan of that policy. I never, ever respond to "make offer" sales. "OBO" is fine, but stick a price on that thing. You know what you want for it. You're just hoping that someone will offer you more.

 this but I admit that is my opinion. I share it with you though. :)

The few times I have done this I don't have a price in mind. Maybe a range at best, and I'm looking to be fair to someone. I would rather have someone send me an offer just under what I wanted then someone to see I want just more then they are willing to spend and instead of buying they move on.

I do agree however, it would be easier if people just posted prices.

and I'm sorry but the whole idea of "Crapping up a thread" is ludicrous. It's a message board. You're supposed to post messsages that are relevant to the thread title. That's the whole point of posting on one of these boards. To exchange information. Encouraging people not to post makes no damn sense.

It makes a lot of sense. I moderate the Marketplace section on another computer board, and we discourage "PM Sent" posts.
Why? Because the marketplace section is different from the other sections of the board. It's intended for the sole purpose of selling items and is not an area for discussions. Long threads of PM Sent and other comments conveys nothing about whether the item is sold or pending, but it makes any potential buyer scroll through the thread to see whether the seller posts that the item is sold. Unless the post asks or conveys additional information about the item (eg, where are you located? Is it the Rev. 1 or 2 board) it's just noise in a thread that benefits from being short and to the point.

As others have suggested, put the onus on the seller. Sold the item? Post that it's sold. Now everyone knows.

I ran into a similar discussion in which someone angrily insisted that if you put an item on your ebay Watched list, you should be obligated to place a bid otherwise you were somehow being deceitful.

Ditto!
There is no reason to clog up a post so the next person has to page through it, especially when there is more than 1 item.
It is up to the seller to post that the item is sold.
Waaa! If you didn't get there first, it happens to me all of the time, I don't like it, but it's just life. Go post for one in the Wanted section.
You will run into the same problem if you send a PM after someone else, but before they got back to the thread to type 'PM sent.'
How can you honestly post 'PM sent' until you send the PM?
If someone types 'PM sent', it doesn't mean anything, because it could just be a question or the seller could turn down the offer.
At least typing, "I'll take it." indicates you actually want to buy it, but doesn't mean you will.
Making these types of posts, might put off someone else from sending an offer thinking an item is sold when it isn't, and cause the seller to miss a sale.
Again... when the item is sold it is up to the seller to say so.
