What is the best portable NES to get as far as compatibility, looks, and the cart not sticking way out? Looking for suggestions from people that have them, thanks.

Does not compute. There is NO SUCH THING. NES games are huge - it is impossible for them to not stick way out of any clone except for perhaps the Generation NEX.

Anyway, I would suggest waiting a few weeks until reviews (including mine) pour in about how good the RetroDuo Portable is. It has the potential to best anything on the market currently, but we shall see.

Don't buy a FC Mobile II - the build quality just ISN'T there and the NOACs have a tendancy to die. I've had two of them and they suck. Get a GameAxe Color if you can.

If you wanted a portable NES system that didn't have the carts stick out, it would be a massive handheld. Not that the current ones aren't big enough or anything, haha!

A DS or a PSP with an NES emulator solves the "cartridge sticking out" problem at least!

I have an FC Mobile II that I think still stands as the best portable NES. The obvious downside is that it takes 4 AA batteries, and some people have problems with cart wobble. To my mind, it looks fairly sharp, and has much better compatibility than any of the portable NES versions that came before it.

I wouldn't consider the RetroDuo Portable as a genuine portable when it comes to the NES side; that tower is far too nuts for anything other than television play.

Only way to not have carts sticking out is to take the PCBs out of the shells.

I've often wondered why they don't let the cart slide almost all the way to the bottom of these units, and locate the batteries flat along the bottom. (Lynx II style) The fc mobile cart slot is located really high in the unit, and if a game stuck out 1.5-2" instead of 3-3.5" it would look/work better. It probably has to do with these devices being designed originally for famicom carts.

But for the record, my vote goes for FC Mobile II, though I haven't purchased the latest generation of devices. It's not perfect. The cross-pad is split into two parts for no logical reason, and since they didn't do wireless controllers well, they shouldn't have bothered at all.

It's a neat solution to a lot of the problems mentioned before... but I'm very skeptical of clones anymore. This review indicates a few things to look out for. And personally, I have to wonder how expensive it's going to be. I wouldn't pay too much for a clone, especially when the real deal is so cheap.

Also, for the record, the FC Mobile II is not perfect, but it's pretty good at what it does.

I think the universal answer is FC Mobile II. I like mine. Compatibility is decent, and it gets less wrong than the other ones.

The alternatives that come to mind are the FC Mobile (lousy compatibility), Game Axe (ancient+expensive), and retro duo portable which requires a bulky adapter.
I would take the FC Mobile II over software emulation, but I can't say the same about any of its competiton.

Quite honestly a modded PSP 2000 or 3000. All of the NOAC clones are really not good. I recently reviewed the RetroDuo Portable which had a lot of promise, but it too fails to live up to expectations. Emulation is the clear winner so far. The PSP emulates the NES brilliantly.

If I were to give you the "best" advice, I'd be bouncing between the two options above. Really, a modded PSP is probably the most practical solution, everybody seems to like theirs. However, I'm a "real carts" kinda guy, so if you're like me, then I'd say the FC Mobile II is the best option in that category. I have one, I like it... but the problem is, even though the system is portable, the NES games aren't-- this is where the thread got started. It's just not something you can avoid. The FCM2 is "portable" in that you can take it to the bedroom or onto the porch... but if you wanted to take it on a plane or on a bus, it's going to start feeling silly rather quickly.

The Dingoo would be another option, if you start warming to emulation.
