I see some of you use emulators to play the HSC on here, I was wondering what you use. I have Jum and I have a hard time using it. I can't find many emulators out there for the 5200 and many of them seem to not be updated anymore.

Thanks

While Dumping and checking my 5200 Prototype collection I used three emulators for the 5200

Jun52 V1.1 Win32/SDL

MESSUI 0.130 (March 10 2009)

AtariWIN PLus 4.0

The first two listed above were very finiky and would run only about 75% of the games, between the two I think I could play about 90%.
The AtariWIN PLus 4.0 was nearly 100% so of the three the best choice I found to be this one

Here is a link to the home page of AtariWIN PLus 4.0
http://a800win.atari-area.prv.pl/ you will need to click on the little British flag lower left of page to see the page in english

I use Atari Win plus 4.0 for 5200 and 8-bit emulation. Works really well for me personally.

I use Jum and I like how simple it is to get the games loaded and running but, I would like to find something that emulates a little better and is easy to use that isn't too complicated to setup.

Kat5200 has worked well for me; the only issue I had was Popeye not working.

I had trouble setting up others, but this was not stupidly simple either.

KAT5200 used to work good but then started giving debug errors. Now I can't et it tot work decent on my laptop. JUM52 and rainbow never worked on MAC or PC. Rainbow worked finally but no joystick support on my mac. Cant figure it out. Only way to play is ebay a real 5200 and some gold controllers or a wico. Or masterplay clone from low_budget.

I agree. I use it to develop on, and it has the most accurate timing of any 5200 emulator I've used, comparing with my real 5200. Its color palette isn't 100% correct though, but I'm not sure any emulator has 100% correct colors.

I had a hard time finding a good 5200 emulator just the other month until someone mentioned Altirra.. now it's all I use for 5200 games. Works great.

I use kat5200; especially nice is the NTSC video output and supports two independent fire buttons properly. Altirra is a close runner up, but lacks the proper fire button support which is a common issue in other 8-bit computer focused emulators (I.E. WinAtari800(Plus)).

Kat5200 also allows distinguishing between analog and digital controller behavior. You want the input to behalf like an analog controller (Typical 5200 controller) for a game like Centipede, but rather have digital controls for a game like Pac-Man. Pretty cool feature if you have a controller with both hat (digital pad) support and analog stick, as then you can map respectively. However, I personally rather map the digital behavior to my Hotrod SE, or USB Atari 2600 controller....but to each their own. :-)

kat5200 works great for me under XP SP2 & SP3 as well as Win 7 64-bit Home Premium. I use version 0.6.2 without any problems.

Altirra supports both buttons fine.

Very Nice...Thanks for the clarification on the buttons and the video options.
Now if only it would add digital/analog control difference handling... :ponder:
It could become my number one choice for 5200 emulation
