I was scared @ first when my username was Mark T and I tried to change it to Mtshark7 but it wouldn't allow me to change it. So I sent an email to Al awhile back with no response so I just said screw it! haha.

To me I find it more friendly refering to the person by their first name esp. when dealing in the market place...I would hope we are all civil on here.

I doubt there's really any reason to fear using your real name in your username. That is, unless you're a child.

What would be the benefit of saying "Yurkie (Todd)"? Seems to me to be a waste of key presses, and that precious extra 2 seconds you can never get back.

First name, probably not, though I prefer privacy myself. Full name, well, then it's just like Facebook: would you want every prospective employer, every vengeful ex, or every busybody family member in your life looking over your shoulder every time you post? I know I wouldn't.

I don't know anyone's real name, and for that reason would rather people used their usernames if only because if you just came out and said something like, "Bob knows where to get those, you should ask him." I'd have no idea who you were talking about. lol

I have a part time job with a company that can take your name and/or email address, plug them into a program that then searches the internet for you and reports back all the information it could find. It is used to let them build a profile for possilbe customers, but could be used just as easily to do any number of other less then cool things. Just saying.

I was surprised - when I joined here in 2007 - how many people masquerade behind "handles." I mean, I used to do it on the BBS' back in the 80s when I was 15 years old. But grown men? I suppose.

With the lack of privacy that the poster above mentions, I guess it makes sense. Still seems a bit childish, but as long as we communicate effectively (we get our points across) then it's irrelevant what we call each other, eh?

Sometimes I can't keep track of one individuals multiple nicknames. I'll use their first name if it's publicly available on any of their forums.

There is NO privacy in nicknames. They are only convenient if you want to associate a particular set of online activities with a particular handle.

If your name is Fred Dickensniffer and your username is King_Muffin_Top and you don't mention your real name or say much about your personal life, you have at least some privacy. As someone said earlier, your boss won't be able to Google "Fred Dickensniffer" and find out that you post nasty things about him as King_Muffin_Top.

Screen names are good, but I try to use real names when PM'ing if I've known the person a long time - 'specially back in the Usenet days or can remember their name through deals we've made.

I like to hide behind my user name. I've had over a dozen nicknames on various forums. It may sound weird to some people but i have always preferred people to call me by those names when i'm on the internet. Maybe it's weird? I don't know.

A few people did that to me on Youtube when i sent them a package, they used my real name. I am not upset about it and i am not going to tell them what to call me. But i would of preferred if they had said IntellivisionDude. But i am not that weird i'm going to enforce it.
