Eventhough it's not normally my thing. I used to really enjoy watching the anime Shin Chan and Case Closed on Adult Swim years ago when they still aired. Looking on ebay I saw that they made gameboy games based off of these anime, and there suprisingly cheap to. I would love to buy and play the games, but before even thinking about doing that. I was wondering if anyone on here knew if the games would be playable for someone who does not know japanese.

Gameboys are region free. So are most handhelds. You should be able to play them fine.

The question is not regional compatibility but playability for someone without knowledge of Japanese.

It might help to provide the names of the specific games you're wondering about as this is a pretty broad question, there are something like 7 Meitanti Conan games spread across GB, GBC & GBA and 6 Crayon Shin-Chan games on GB & GBA.

The Meitanti Conan games appear to be awfully dialogue heavy, based on this sample of gameplay from one of them:

While I didn't look very hard, I couldn't find any info as to whether any of the other Meitanti Conan games diverge from this style but I think it's safe to assume that the language barrier will be an issue, given the nature of the anime and the game adaptations one could naturally expect of it.

As for the Crayon Shin-Chan games, they're mostly platformers but #3 on GB is a series of minigames. You would find the Crayon Shin-Chan entries on Game Boy to be infinitely more playable, I imagine. Pointless trivia, Crayon Shin-Chan 4 was hacked to create the pirate Super Mario Land 4.
