I tried out Quake Live when it was still in beta on PC - it was fun. The original Quake III is probably pretty close to the very peak of old-school-style FPS deathmatching. Well, maybe that and the original Unreal Tournament.

I preferred Unreal Tournament. The flak cannon, more variety of maps, and more game modes (though my memory of the game modes is failing me right now). Also, the bots were smarter.

I also prefer UT compared to Quake 3.

If you want to play Quake 3, check out Quake Live. Http://www.quakelive.com This is where Quake 3 is now currently at, plays just the same, with online ranking. Its also completely free.

Quake III is still awesome. The way to go these though is Quake Live. It's free to play, some maps have been tweaked, it tracks your play stats, and more.

I'm a huge id Software fan from their early days at Apogee. I can ramble on for hours talking about the Quake games.

These days, Quake Live is the way to go for your Q3 fix.

Not sure about the server issue. Will check when I get home from work. Still have my Q3A cd and a Steam copy. I'm such a Quake whore.

A few people from the Q3A comunity have created a master server, you have to download a replacement file (or edit a file) to redirect the game to another master server. unfortunately this effects more games then just Q3A.

No love here =( I got the game dirt cheap a while back, hoping there were at least some cool mods for it.

Nope.

At least I got to give it one good LAN play one night, though. Went through prettymuch every map all of my friends had made. This map will bog your system down: http://www.simonoc.c...maps_q3/pom.htm

I thought the Dreamcast version of the game was kind of alright though (even though it's nearly impossible to aim without a mouse), but maybe that's just because there were only the two decent FPS for the system =/

There are alot of cool mods for it... Excessive plus, Rocket Arena,,,

And I'm talking about the PC game here. My e6600/7600gt system gets over 100FPS with the game maxed out. And around 350-400FPS on the basic settings. I love the game and it was THE PC benchmark for a long time! Can't belive ID dropped the master server support. :(

Rocket Arena's okay, but basically just the same game that was in the first Quake, and I'd lost my enthusiasm for random online games long ago. Was hoping for some inventive mods that weren't just remakes.

Or some single-player ones, but I only managed to find one of those, and only one and a half levels were finished for it.

Really cool engine though, I think it aged well (heck, I think CoD can attest to that). Maybe I'll have to try modding it myself some day.

But yeah, like everyone else said, Q3's been replaced by Quake Live.

I was playing Quake Live all night and it's cool and all, But what do you do if/when their website is down when you want to play? I guess I'm just old school.

You can play Open Arena. It's based on iD's GPL release of the Q3A source code. It just has different art and maps. I have no idea if Q3 mods will apply to OA. But it plays well and there's always someone to frag.
