And don't even get me started on those misguided people who pronounce "caramel" as "car-mull" instead of "kær-ә-mεl".

:-D

I think its more of a choice of preference. Like Linix. the correct pronunciation is Lie-nix, but many people like myself perfer Lin-ix.... I know its wrong, but I don't care and anyone who corrects me is going to hear me say just that.

I do that that :-D

Now, how do you pronounce "almond"? I had a friend who insisted it is ammond (like "ammo" or "salmon"). I pronounced it ahmond maybe with a hint of an "l". I have no idea if it is correct, I just think it sounds better that way. I had a teacher who said they were almonds until you beat the "l" out of them and they became ammonds.

I think I said guh-lay-guh when I was a teen.

I also said quicks for Qix instead of kicks like you're supposed to.

always figured the Brits pronounced it Ga-lah-ga where most Americans Gal-ih-guh. I don't really think either is wrong necessarily.

I still pronounce Qix as quicks because that is how I read it and I haven't heard it spoke. I say car-mull because even though I know it is wrong it sounds weird to me otherwise. Many people here say worsh instead of wash and rass ceiling instead of wrestling. Breakfast is a strange word. I haven't ever heard it pronounced break fast. I've heard breckfest or brefess.

Anyway, I pronounce the l and second g twice like gal-lag-ga.

Hahahaa, wow. I'd say that Xexys is "zeck-sis" but that's a guess.

As for Galaga, everyone I know back in the grand days of arcades called it "ga-lah-ga" or some version of a soft 'a' in the middle. Maybe a few "ga-li-guh"s out there but I remember almost everyone pronouncing all three 'a's as 'ah'. Nobody every used a hard 'a' as far as I can remember ("gay-lah-ga" or "ga-lay-ga" or anything like that), either.

Well the mighty Persian King's name was XERXES, pro-nounced Zerk-Zeez, for a starting point.

It's Ga-La-Ga. There's no "i" in it; the second and third syllables rhyme. See the Japanese spelling: ギャラ
Seems like if you say it fast enough, though, it comes out the same... gal-ih-guh, gal-ah-guh, no diff.

I don't think there is any need to spell the two differently, it's simply a matter of choosing which syllable gets the accent.

gal'-ah-guh vs. gal-ah'-guh, where the apostrophe denotes the accented syllable.

Nine out of ten non-retards recognize the first pronunciation as the correct one.

The former pronunciation is the one I use, and I maintain that it's the correct one. If you doubt this, ask yourself if "A long time ago in a ga-lah-xie far, far away" sounds right to you.

I agree

I agree

It absolutely does. What's the issue?
