saw the latest trailer...

!

I saw the following post at the Joystiq blog post of Dragon's Lair and who knows if it's legitimate, but if it is, it looks good:

by a user named sydbolton: I was fortunate enough to play this game during a recent visit to Digital Leisure doing some research ... and I have to tell you, this is the most AMAZING and fun filled Dragon's Lair experience I have had in a long time. These guys have put a LOT of extras into the game - the Kinect controls are not just "up, down, left, right" - you actually have to climb the ropes, and pull the sword from the stone etc. It's great and so is the presentation etc. If you don't like all of that you can still use the controller of course but trust me you are going to WANT to play this with Kinect!

If you check out his post history, Syd is a Dragon's Lair fanatic! He owns every copy! The sad part is the best version (HD-DVD) is still shrink-wrapped! I guess he didn't want to buy the HD-DVD player...

That looks cool. I wonder if they'll end up doing that with the other FMV games.

Wish I knew when this was coming out! Yea, I heard this mentioned on the Major's podcast as well, so as far as I'm aware this is all legit. At least that the game is being released on XBLA....didn't realize about the Kinect controls. That's definitely a plus.

Why do I get the feeling that the controls won't work?

Probably because they don't work well on more than half of the existing Kinect games...

It's just uncanny how these old laserdisc games continue to be re-released system after system. They're on just about every game system ever made! I like(d) DL and SA well enough, but jeez... can't imagine there being *that* much interest in 'em generation after generation. Guess they're probably super cheap licenses to procure too.

yeah, the last time I actually bought these QTE games... I have the HD-DVD for Dragon's Lair. The DVD for Space Ace. And before that... I bought Brain Dead 13 for the PC. Dragon's Lair and Dragon's Lair II for the Atari ST.

EGM's reviewer didn't like it.

I think the Kinect controls do make it feel like a different game and refreshes it.

Otherwise, like the reviewer indicated, playing it with the gamepad just makes it the same game it's always been.

I'm glad people posted follow-ups to this thread....I almost forgot about this!

See, for me as a person who's never owned Dragon's Lair (yes, really) I'm happy to hear it's the same game as it's always been. I fought my way through Space Ace on iOS last week in preperation for this release. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Cool! Is this an actual disc release or just a download? I'd likely get it either way but if it's on disc I'll get it sooner :)

if you want it on disc, there's plenty of versions out there. You can get the BluRay version, the HD-DVD version, the DVD version, for the PC, etc.

But yeah, if you want a 360 version with Kinect, this downloading XBLA title is it. At least it's only $10. I paid $30 for the HD-DVD version, I think (but that version had audio commentary, featurettes, behind the scenes, etc.).

It's mind boggling when you think of how much mileage Don's cells have gotten over the years! Very much deserved by the way, but still..... :)

alright, they did a lot to make the game more accessible to people.

the adventure mode is the no-fail mode. you can play along or you can just watch. if you're late with the move or choose the wrong move, you'll see the move highlighted in red. if you choose the right move at the right time, the move is highlighted in green. but regardless, you get to advance. the demo defaults to adventure mode.

there's the arcade setting which is the way it was in the arcades. you die and get to the next randomized scene.

the home mode is where you can learn the scenes. you stay on the scene until you finish it. so if you ever wanted to learn the game, now you can. that was the big complaint I had with the HD-DVD In that version, you could never get your bearings as you would die and then jump to another scene and by the time you got back to the scene that you died on, you had already forgotten what you did and tended to repeat your mistakes.

the controller mode gets this weird big bezel around it. the kinect mode has the graphics take up the whole screen! as if you needed further reason to do the kinect mode. I played the HD-DVD version of Dragon's Lair and it didn't have a huge bezel around it.

Dragon's Lair just keeps finding new ways to suck, and new systems to suck on. Most un-fun, overrated game ever.

Yeah, I want it on disc with Kinect. Hell, I already own Dragons Lair for probably every system it was made on, I just hate paying for downloads since I am more of a collector :) I suppose I can just play it and swing my controller in time with the motions on TV and get the same effect, lol

Out of curiousity how old are you? Did you grow up playing it in the arcade?
This is not meant as any form of "attack" I just have a theory about Dragon's Lair...

I seem to find people that remember actually playing it in the arcade have still have that fascination associated with it, since when it came out it just blew everyone away, myself included, seriously it was just unreal....you would have to wait in line to play it!

Younger people OR people who just didn't remember (or play) it back in the day seem to not get what all the fuss is about, and well, if you didn't take part in the Dragons Lair craze it is totally understandable.

I think sales of this game now relies HEAVILY if not completely on nostalgia since honestly...it is really outdated and not that playable compared to todays standards, it's really just memorizing patterns so you can watch a cartoon.

I think part of me just still can't fathom the idea that I am playing Dragon's Lair at home and to play a version that would actually respond to my movement (via kinect) it sounds like everything a 10 year old could have ever asked for.

I was born in '78. I do remember playing Dragon's Lair in the arcade, but it probably wasn't right at the time of release, maybe a couple years later. I remember really liking games like Gauntlet, Ghost'n Goblins, Wonder Boy, Double Dragon, Black Tiger, Mega Force(?), Mat Mania.

I have vague earlier memories of playing Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, but the most vivid of all, if you can believe it, is Super Bug.

There was a sense of wonder at the Dragon's Lair cabinet, but as soon as I tried the game, I was like, "You don't even control the character. There's no way to know what to do and when to do it. This is stupid. It stole my money."

I also remember playing Dragon's Lair for the C64. That actually seemed more fun to me than the arcade, because it felt more like a video game, but it was way too hard to get past even the very first stage.

haters gonna hate... nothing you can do about them.

I remember Dragon's Lair and all the other laserdisc games in the arcade. I remember watching people play rather than play myself because it was so expensive to play and because it was so brutally unforgiving in difficulty and chewed through quarters like nothing else. I think the arcade owners actually bumped up the number of lives on the machine so that people got more bang for the quarters.

I wish I'd seen one of these machines when I was growing up. I just never did. I'm sure I would've been amazed, but all I can see this as is "how many quarters is 10 minutes worth of Bluth worth to ya?"

I remember being so bummed when I was a kid and went through a buck in like 30 seconds. I couldn't have been older than 7 at the time....didn't stand a chance against that machine! I still dig it though....fortunately wasn't dumb enough to keep pumping it full of quarters, and instead stood back and enjoyed Don's cells.

When a game's more enjoyable as a youtube video, was it really that much of a game to begin with?
