C816 - something to droll to

It looks like connectors for a daughter board

I spy...

W65C816S6PLG-14

144 pin Xilinx CPLD

Flash chip

Micro SD socket?

Lots of RAM.

Question is, have you made another upgrade or finally gone ahead and made a "new" Atari computer?

Looks awesome either way :-)

And don't forget the connectors that look like they might be for a daughter board for more RAM.

Yep, I see that now. Good find.

Looks like two connectors for a memory daughter board...

1 10-pin connector for JTAG Xilinx interface

1 40-pin connector for cable that goes to a socket where the "old" 40 pin Atari 6502c processor was.

So I guess it's an upgrade, and looks like a clean and easy one at that /-)

So I guess this will be the first project to make use of the inexpensive assembly house you discovered, Candle?

In any case, great work -- I'm looking forward to this. Definitely put me on the preorder list. :)

I already have an idea for a programming project that I'd like to do with a 65816 and VBXE.

Can't wait! :D

Yes, my #2 wish is that it will coexist with VBXE and IDE +2.

#1 wish is that it runs at 7 or 14 MHz.

In such case, I'm assuming it has some significant amount of dedicated Ram which can be accessed at full speed and any references to external Ram, Rom or I/O will be at legacy speed. Point Y1 there looks suspiciously like the mounting point for a crystal.

I was wondering if the 40-pin connector went to the 6502c socket or PBI.

Hmmmm... any chance of a new CPU board for the 800? :)

Not PBI, it doesn't have enough pins.

now I'm wondering...

according to WDC, their FPGA implementation of the W65C816S can supposedly do 100MHz+. will candle be using that or will he be using the normal 14mhz chip? imagine how fast IDE could go at 96.66 mhz (about 27xNTSC, which means 54x the normal atari speed). of course, we are limited by the original atari PCB, so it would probably have problems going that fast.

The FPGA core requires a license which would be cost prohibitive for a project like this.

So I'm sure he's using the off the shelf part.
