Anyway, once again if this comes to pass, it's just another reason I won't be gaming anymore. (With Sony or EA etc)

I'm not worried too much because most of the talent (and other people in video gaming) will simply make games for the PC or other device that WILL NOT have ads.

I firmly beleive if someone doesn't do something right someone else will. Bye bye Sony.

Sony doesn't realize that there are other options for developers out there. Kickstarter is one of them.

Whatever.....

I'll take it over paying for DLC.

You make it sound like this would obviously be an either-or situation rather than both-at-the-same-time. Why would they give up one revenue stream for another if they can milk them both.

Umm, screw Sony right in the pooper. If they go to this I'm out. I'm not spending $60 on a game to watch commercials. This is at least half the reason I just stopped going to movies. I'm not paying to watch commercials. The prices go up, the number of commercials go up, and it all means more money for someone else.

I still have enough old games to play. I can get by without more crap from Sony.

I don't know if it will be. If it's both, the industry will suffer.

You beat me to it, cimerians!

^ Even if it's not both, it's going to hurt the industry. I'm glad I never bought a PS3 or PSP now.

Yep. Sony's plan: You'll take both and you'll smile while we give it to you.

Well, making the obligatory point that in-game ads are nothing new...

... it'd be really interesting to see how Sony can try to push this on customers and still present themselves as better than the competition.

Sony...they just don't get it. Either that or arrogance\greed. Or all of the above.

a combo of greed and they just don't care. a game like call of duty could charge you for each bullet fired and there'd still be a million fanboys ready to de-pants and bend over the barrel.if 'fans' don't care, why should they?

Why can't they just do it like in Trackmania? Stream ads onto the in-game billboards and signs. It wasn't distracting, and blended quite well with the game.

Two thoughts, First, while in-game ads like the Pizza Hut ad above can be annoying, they also can blend into the scenery when done well. Think billboards in racing games, ads on the boards in hockey games, etc. This patent, however, is for a method of pausing a game to force an ad to play.

Second, I read once that iPod apps have taught game players that games should cost $0.99 or something very inexpensive. I guess it's also fair to say iPod apps have taught game MAKERS that people will put up with numerous ads to play cheap games!
