VbB: Music and Sound editor problem

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently installed bB+VbB. All is working good, except the Music and Sound editor. Whenever I want to open it, there's an error. Tried soundlib version 1.0.0.1 as well as the recent build, no change. Any ideas?

Did you unzip it into the same folder with Visual batari Basic before opening VbB?

This is what my folder looks like:

If the unzipped file is in the folder with VbB and you closed and restarted VbB once it was in there and it's still not working, see if this thread is any help:

Ah the work in progress one from my blog. I just downloaded the two archives and put them in a new folder and it appears to work for me. Possible you copied the wrong files to the folder? Redownloading and overwriting didn't change anything?

What version of Windows?

32-bit/64-bit?

Virtualized?

anti-virus interfering?

I don't see much XP anymore so I can't say for sure, but it may be that you are missing the Microsoft Visual Studio Runtime that library uses (Msvcr71.dll). I thought a fresh install of XP installed the .net framework 1.1, but it's been over a decade since Microsoft released XP so I don't remember anymore. Anyway it looks like that is required from what I read here. I would search your system and make sure it is in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC), if not perhaps a fresh, full install of .NET 1.1 may help (http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=16217)

UPDATE: I installed a fresh copy of XP in a virtual machine and got the same error. I had to install the .NET 1.1 framework SDK (link above) to get it to work. I am sure it doesn't require the entire 106MB download, but I just chose to install everything to be safe.

RT there is something new to document :)

Yay, it works. Tried a couple of VS redists first, which unfortunately didn't fix the problem.

So I had to install the SDK after all. Would be great if the needed dlls could be identified, so users don't have to install the full SDK package.

Btw I think XP is still widely used among homebrew developers, as it offers better backward compatibility, is much faster, and not everybody wants to install 15GB Win7 or 8 system. (In fact you neither need a dual core nor 2 GB of RAM to run VbB under XP.)

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help!

Edit: I love how in normal mode, the pitch offset values are denoted (I'm assuming that's what those +/- values are supposed to be). That's a genius feature. Might be useful to display something like this in Expert mode as well, maybe with a little tooltip?

As far as ILDASM is concerned it's only using mscorlib and Msvcr71 both of which I found by just installing the redist, but perhaps they aren't properly GAC'd without the SDK. I dunno. Installing the SDK will make sure you have the thousands of files that could be used by any .NET application. Gives you an idea of how old XP really is. Despite it's popularity, Microsoft will stop patching XP come 4/8/13 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/endofsupport.aspx) so it's a ticking timebomb.

But I am glad we could fiuger out the problem and get you working :) I am suprised it took 4 years for somebody to come across this. I guess everybody installed the necessary files at some point via other methods.
