have they left a backdoor way of getting in?

i'll tell you a little story...

whilst giving a demonstration of the gba player unit for the gc using a retail japanese console Nintendo slipped up, the didnt insert their gba player boot disc when they turned on the gc....

.... the gba player booted and came online word is spreading that they may actualy release the gba player as a multi region system without the need for a boot disc.

the implications for this are huge, it means its possible to boot a gamecube from its connecting port (like on a dr v64).

Could this be a way in? who knows, but its an interesting thought :D

if it is possible, it would require extra hardware to play backups or pirates (a PC hookup or some sort of external drive). It would be much more expensive than a relativly simple mod chip installed into a PS2 or XBox.

I was actually thinking that it would allow a group to hack up some custom
hardware to load a programe that would read a GC disk and output it through
some port (controller or serial?). And have a simple modchip (or even the
current no chip import mod ;) ) to play the images. or not :P

I don't own a GC I'm just really curious how long it will take to hack the GC :D
I actually think Nintendo hit a homerun with this protection scheme :)

i agree, it bugs the hell out of me, when Sony and MS complain about people pirating games, when their protection schemes all but beg hackers to break them. Nintendo actually does something practical to keep piracy to a minimum.

If Nintendo was smart, they probably made the thing with some sort of security features that requires authentication or something... It's not like they stuck an ethernet connection on it, and had it run a telnet server :)

I still don't see how this would be all that useful though... unless you had mini-DVD's that you could burn of course (Do they make these? I've seen mini-CDR's...)

Of course, who knows? I guess someone will find out soon enough if this is possible.

Not completely surprising to me, remembering the old ps1 days + action replay carts (caetla anyone?), a bootable port would really kick ass for hacking/developing... But I've been hearing that the GC has already been hacked (for months now) and some homebrew stuff has been cooking - I don't know the details yet as I haven't been following that scene much these days...
