Must go to:

...the off-key opening sequence in "Xevious".

Actually, I love it. To each their own. *shrug*

I'd vote for Dig Dug. If it weren't for the fact that the graphics are a *little* better on the 7800 version, I coulda sworn I was playing the 2600 Dig Dug... Kinda disappointing, but since it didn't have the "new and improved" sound on it, I guess it would make sense...

IMHO, the graphics on the 7800 version of Dig Dug are a lot better than the 2600 version. :) But the sound was virtually identical to the 2600 version. I noticed that right away, and was wondering why they didn't at least try to rework the sound a little bit.

The Xevious opening music was off-key, but it didn't bother me.

I think the award should go to the trio of Nintendo game conversions for the 7800: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros. They were all very good games, but the music and sound effects were nowhere near as good as they could have been.

No, the absolute worst music in a 7800 game would probably have to go to the aforementioned Donkey Kong. Specifically, the title screen's ditty. DKjr and Mario Bros got nothin on that.

I would give that award to the unholy crap that spews from the speaker on DK. That was just streight up aweful noise. Even the 2600 had many soundtracks that sounded WAY better

I think it is a cool tune but DK2 is a bit weird... I have not played the nes version as that console was only a hit in the USA. It sank without a trace over here in Blighty! I will have a think about this and post my thoughts next week.

I could not agree more. I find 7800 Mario Bros, which in all other aspects is a pretty good conversion, to be almost completely unplayable because of the horrid sound FX. Donkey Kong is almost as bad.

I don't think there's a single sound effect in Donkey Kong that's correct.

The title music is terrible.
The starting tune has been butchered.
The walking and climbing noises sound horrible.
Jumping plays what should be the scoring noise.
Scoring just plays an even higher pitched and faster version of that sound.
All of the stage clear tunes are extremely poorly sequenced.
And don't forget the death sound. It's a friggin' joke.
I can't remember the springboard sound, but I'm pretty sure it's messed up too.

That version of Donkey Kong is just bad in general.

And yet it's still better than the one on 2600. Scary thought.

BTW, I nominate Super Skateboardin' as the worst 7800 tuneage ever.

Basketbrawl is really bad
DK, DK Jr is horrible
Motorpsycho is weird....really weird

But hey, why start the list? Everything is pretty rotten except Ballblazer, Commando, and a few others...

...to show that everyone's musical tastes are unique?
I personally find the music in DK to be quite charming, in its own way -- so there you go! ;)

Scrapyard Dog music reeks. And Xenophobe's little musically ditty is brutal...!!!

I would certainly think that the best non-Pokey soundtrack 7800 game is Food Fight... hands down.

I also dig the opening and closing tunes on Desert Falcon... very Arabic!

As for Dig Dug, the only sound difference between the 2600 and 7800 is that the digging music doesn't reset to the start everytime it is cancelled out by a fygar or whatever... it continues where it leaves off.

Cheers!

Joey

Heh - I didn't find SCRAPYARD DOG's music back. It wasn't good by any stretch, but I found it non-offensive compared to other 7800 music.
