Since I recently snagged three new Lynx games on eBay, my first Lynx buy in three years, I'm getting on a Lynx buying binge.

I realized I don't have any kind of racing game. What are the opinions on Checkered Flag and Championship Rally? If you could only have one, which would ya get?

I've never played Championship Rally but I can wholeheartedly recommend Checkered Flag. Good graphics, sound and above all playability, and in ComLynx mode it's near unparalleled. An essential Lynx purchase in my view.

i like checkered flag best myself.it has more variety and tracks.more com-
lynx capability too,i think.the only problem with flag is,it doesn't have any
pitstops during play.i hate having to unlock tracks in a game(in the case of
championship rally) to further allow me enjoy any other levels there might
be in it.you pick up flag and you can choose any of 18 tracks to race on.it
also allows player gender choice, race lap number choice, car color choice,
single heat or tournament or qualifying lap, race against drone car number
choice and etc.i just love the variety of checkered flag. :D some rather like rally too.i just hate a game to limit my track choices from the very beginning.it is isn't that rally is a total piece of crap, either. i just want more than three tracks to race on when i fire up my lynx.-chris

Championship Rally has some hidden shortcuts in almost all tracks. It also has a lot of tuning options, ghost cars for learning your best driving routes and icy roads for variety.

There may be hidden things in the game that allows you to bypass the troubles chris mentioned...

In my opinion this is a very nice game both in single and ComLynx mode. Besides it has a built-in downloader that allows you to use your Lynx for downloading small applications to RAM as well.

I really enjoy Checkered Flag, with Shangai, probably one of those classic 'desert island' games for the Lynx. I haven't tried Championship Rally, the screenshots look great but I usually like to try out games before spending close to forty bucks on them.

Would it be possible for Carl to release a limited demo of the CR game for use on the Handy emulator? Like maybe a 3-minute limit on gameplay or only 1 lap on 1 of the tracks. I know this last year I've bought several homebrews at $20-40 a pop after trying out their demos. For example demos convinced me that I would replay and enjoy 2600 Gunfight and 5200 Koffi. Anyways, I'm more of a player than collector and that's what sways me into purchasing.

Don't forget "Roadblasters" amongst your racing lists. OK -- it is more of an arcade title, but it still has excellent racing action.

If you include Roadblasters (One of the best ports ever :D ) then you also have to include STUN Runner. I'd Skip Hard Drivin' though. It's way to slow & hard to control. I really enjoy Road Riot 4WD, but it's a harder game to get.

To get back on topic: both Checkered Flag & Championship Rally are great racing games but are totally different. Checkered Flag is a first person view similar to the Pole Position games and is a wonderfully done game. Personally it's hard to beat it com-lynxed (Warbirds would be the only game I enjoy more comlynxed). Championship Rally is a top down "Rally" style game similar to the old Rally-X arcade game. The cars have fairly decent physics and it's a lot of fun learning how to slide around the corners. I really enjoy it a lot also but for totally different reasons than Checkered Flag. So it's really a matter of which style of racing game you prefer. You can't go wrong with either one.

I agree it would be nice to have a small demo. You may want to check directly with Carl (songbird.atari.net). Easiest way would be to have only 1 track and only 1 mode.

I agree with one of the comments that it's a different game. I didn't want to create a clone of an existing game (super off road may be close but I still think it's not comparable).

no,there is no way to compare champ rally to super off road.super off ro-
ad can be fun(been all the way through it with 29 million points several
different times) but it can be a confusing game to play-a bit glitchy,i think.
never comlynxed on it at all.i would've liked champ rally better with a bit
better track select at the beginning.i'm thinking champ allows 4 or 6 guys/
gals to go at it too.never done comlynx on it either.-chris
