I play Counter Strike all the time but I have a program called "The All seeing eye" which finds the servers that are closest to me. It prevents me from playing on boards and constantly running into lag death.

Old thread, but I gotta ask...

What is the point of this game? What are you supposed to do? I was just playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein's "Enemy Territory" and it just seems like there is WAY too much going on. 4 different classes, a bunch of targets, and a ton of chaos with very little organization. Doesn't seem like much fun to me.

I guess I prefer DM, CTF, and the like. Simple and easy to figure out.

Gregory, are you asking about the point of Counter-Strike, or the point of RTCW: Enemy Territory?

The objectives of Counter-Strike vary according to what game mode you are playing. On some maps, the terrorists try to plant a bomb in a certain area (usually two on each map) while the CT's try to stop them or defuse the bomb. On some maps, the CT's try to rescue hostages that the terrorists are holding in some facility. There are some other modes as well. Some custom maps are chaos, but most of the official maps are good.

I like Counter-Strike because of the team-based nature, and because it has a good "feel" to it. Deathmatch bores me to tears, and since I'd rather have fun than "beat" everybody (I'm not a competitive person, I'd rather just have fun), I prefer team-based games anyway. CTF can be fun, depending on how many people are playing and what maps. Have you played Team Fortress Classic for Half-Life? It's (for the most part) like Capture the Flag but with different classes of soldiers.

I haven't played Enemy Territory, so I can't explain what the purpose of that game is.

Is it Terrorists vs. Good Guys? With constant bombs being added and such where it never ends? I gotta have a game that ends not based on a time limit.

One game I liked from Unreal Tournament was Assault. Once you achieve the goal it ends. These CF/Enemy Territory games seem to go on and on and on...

Another thing I don't really like is the class stuff. Really, this belongs in MMORPGs. No one wants to be a medic for pete's sake!

I think it's basically the same as CS, but with better graphics.

counter strike is usually play in 5 minute rounds. At the start of each round, the two teams restart at the same spot of the map and try to each accompish their goal.

Usually on a map, there is a set time limit like 35 minutes for the map and then a new map is loaded. Some maps are well balanced while other maps seem to favor one side or the other and make it a challenge for one of the two teams to succeed (usually requires good team work).

There is also 2 other modes that are not played as often. One is where one player gets chosen as the VIP and must be guarded till the terrorists are either all taken out or the VIP reaches the escape point. If the VIP is killed or does not make it to the escape point within the time limit, the terrorists win the round.

The other version is more like deathmatch where all the weapons are on the floor at the start and each side tries to wipe out all the other players from the other team.

Both Counter Strike and Return To Castle Wolfenstein are team based online games.

Previous posts have explained CS so I will explain RTCW for those who are interested.

It is a team game Allies Vs Axis and there are 4 types of personnel to choose from. MEDIC (to revive the injured), LEUTENNANT (to supply ammo and call airstrikes), ENGINEER (to fix guns and plant dynamite) and SOLDIER (who can use better weapons). The idea is that you have an objective to complete in a set time.

i.e. ALLIES have to dynamite a wall and steal documents from inside the AXIS base and to them transmit them by radio. The AXIS have to stop them until the time runs out. You will need to work effectively as a team to win or just be very lucky. I like all classes but mostly enjoy being a medic as you can revive yourself when near dead.

There is also straight forward team deathmatch games.

Both CS and RTCW are great online games.

I actually don`t like CS anywhere as much as some other HL mods, it is still kind of patchy for being so old and supposedly the best online game of all time. Deathmatch Classic is good, so is Team Fortress Classic, but Science and Industry is awesome. Good concept and plays good too. You should check out Natural Selection 2.0, it`s amazing they cn do all that in a mod.and Public Enemy is also very good, kind of a blade runner like setting. The Wastes is just awesome, all the different weapons, and Akimbo weapons you can weild. And, for a break from the standard realistic mods, Monkey Strike is fun, looks good, and plays good too. Those are my favorite mods right now

I am getting a bit tired of CS... Been playing it too much I suppose... Been playing "Day of defeat" instead... Quite good fun, anyone else like it?

Yes, I used to love CS, but after playing Day of Defeat (DoD) once, I was hooked. DoD is much better IMHO. Better graphics, more realistic weapons/damage, and you respawn every 15 seconds on most maps. Also I've found that servers tend to be faster in general, and maps load faster than CS.
