According to the codes on this page all you have to do to get this 12th game is play all of the other 11 games 20 times. Well I've unlocked all the rest, and I've physically counted myself playing each one 20 times as I unlocked it, and all the rest 20 times as well. Still, no luck. I played each game 3 or 4 more times in a row to up my recorded log totals, STILL no luck. Is the advice on this page a complete load? It was right about unlocking all the rest, but I can't seem to get the ????? off of Ristar no matter WHAT I do! :(

check out the boards there at Gamefaqs.

This particular post says you have to play them FIFTY times:

youll know that youve "maxed out" a game when you boot a title up, and the screen that says "logging game" does not show up before the game starts. Its tedious as hell, and it took me four hours of starting and stopping all of those games to unlock everything. I wish there was a widely available dex drive type device for the cube already so game saves like this turd can be downloaded :(

btw, the game is awesome, the unlocking process is a turd

Damn skippy. I can't believe I have to start and stop each one of these games at least THIRTY more times to get Ristar, but if I have an hour and a half to kill tonight I might give it a whirl anyway.

You'll know you got it, when you no longer have the 'Saving Game Log' screen when you go into the games.

Ristar is a great, great game. There's another way to unlock the games on the Sonic Mega Collection.. BUt it requires you having saved games from other Sega GC games on the same memory card.

Yup, but "Ristar" isn't one of them. I unlocked a game with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and there's one you can unlock with Phantasy Star Online too but it's not Ristar (and whichever one it is I already had).

Once you unlock Ristar, go into the options screen on the game, and into passwords, and enter ILOVEU, and you'll enable the level select screen.

One thing I noticed about Ristar is that the SMC also logs how many times you play THAT. Is there another hidden game or secret?

The Japanese version is alleged to have "Comix Zone" and "The Ooze" as well, but there are button press codes to unlock them so I don't know if you would need Ristar to get them or not. All I can say for certain is that the known unlockable US games on SMC end with Ristar.

(I really wish they had subbed "Comix Zone" for "Flicky" - yeesh what a stinker!)

Even if you can get into the gameplay of Flicky (which I might believe) the horrid soundtrack is doomed to inspire nightmares.

Okay, granted, but can you really say Flicky is a better game than Comix Zone no matter how you slice it?

i agree, but its two different generations, and flicky deserves a spot on a sonic compilation, since flickies are a part of the franchise, while comix zone is just a kickass genesis game :)

i don`t want to stray off-topic or anything, but since it seems to already have been done since the topic was addressed and everything, i`ll go ahead: Is this game worth the price?? And what are all the playable games??

For anything less than $40 it's definitely worth it. Here's the whole list:

* Sonic
* Sonic 2
* Sonic 3
* Sonic & Knuckles
* Blue Sphere (the "lock-on" Knuckles game for Sonic 1)
* Sonic 2 & Knuckles
* Sonic 3 & Knuckles
* Sonic 3-D Blast
* Sonic Spinball
* Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
* Flicky
* Ristar

I finally got Ristar last night. :D

thats pretty sweet. Should i even think of importing the Japanese version so i can get the ooze and comic zone(Which i never have played)??
And i had heard rumors a long time ago, that you could play as Knuckles in Sonic 1, but you had to complete all the sphere levels. I didn`t beleive it really until i saw that passcode after you beat each level. But i have no idea what they are for. Anyways, anything to that??

Nope, it's bunk. Snopes.com should put that one up as an urban myth.

Has anyone found the final answer on this?
Does EACH game have to be played 20 (50) times?
It seems like we've been playing this game forever and we've yet to unlock four of the ?????s.

yes, when you get a couple of hours of spare time, you need to start a game, then quickly pause it and return to the main menu. Do this until you no longer get the saving game file message for that particular cart. Eventually youll unlock all the games this way. Its a royal pain in the ass.

If I recall, they originally wanted Knuckles for Sonic one...but the code was too different and it just wasn't going to work. My understanding that even getting him in Sonic 2 was difficult. So, they settled for having it make special bonus stages ;p

actually, they designed areas in Sonic 2 with Knuckles or a new character in mind, that Sonic could not reach. Sonic 2 was easily the best game in the series, and while Sonic 3 & Knuckles was a satisfying long adventure, the levels were too long and got tedious after awhile. While the Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic 2 is the finest platform game level ever devised :)

i agree, but putting a sega cd emulator on the disc for one game probably wouldve cost them a lot of dev money.

And according to an article I read, the size of the file necessary (ISO image + any emulation code) would have taken up as much space as all of the other unlockable games COMBINED. No room on the disc for it. :(
