My friend and I just made one of these with one of my completely busted-stick controllers. It's pretty easy. We removed all of the original pots (replaced it with a pot from a 2600 paddle) and it uses washers to hold the paddle shaft into place.

Soon I will have my 5200 power supply and TV adapter to actually use it.

yep, that's what I did too. Except I used hot glue to hold it in place . Just don't forget to switch the wires on the pot, or else when you turn it left it will go right, and right when you turn left.

The LED looks different in real life, you don't see the weird like wire of light, I guess the camera just picks that up. Anyways, here's my other "latest creation":

I had my friend who did the solder job also check the pots with a meter. I think they're right. I wanted to hot glue but we think the washers will work.

I used washers in mine, it work's great.
What's nice about using the washers is that it also doesn't permanently attach the pot in there. Which is handy if the pot ever decided to die.

I just cut the original mounting plastic out of the donor paddle and superglued it to the inside of the 5200 controller.
On second thought, that kinda would make it a washer, huh?

I got to play with a controller modified in this fashion at the Atari2600.com booth at PhillyClassic a few weeks ago. Very cool, I definitely need to modify a controller in this fashion!

I have a paddle just like that because Skatepunk made it for me a long time ago and it still works great!

My paddle controller is complete now (awaiting parts for the console to test it). Did anyone remove that rubber protector that goes around the stick? I'd like to put it back on after the paddle assembly but can't figure it out. I may just leave it off in case I did the pot incorrectly...

I got my 5200 paddle controller from Charles Guinn about 2 years ago. It still works great. He even updated it later to include a pushbutton to shift from Lo to High gear in Pole Position as the modification obviously takes away the ability to push up or down to shift.

Hmmmmm, anyone know how to add that push button? I found a 5200 stick at a thrift today (that's a very rare find in these parts) so I'm gonna make a paddle. It would sure be nice to make it useable with PPII.

Hi guys-
Well dont worry it's very simple-
Just get a momentary pushbutton switch with
N.O. contacts (normally open)
I use - RadioShk # 275-1547C

Then attach the red (vertical input) to 1 side of the switch
and the other side of the switch to the blk wire (common)

Note- either wire can go to either side of the switch, it wont
make a difference.

To use- Hold the button in for low gear, release for high gear.
It works great !

I have always loved Pole Position and thought it would work better
with a paddle, but had no way to shift !! But, after I gave it
some thought I added the button and it solved the shift problem
very nicely. Since then I have added this feature to all my CX52Paddles

BTW- the paddle Atari2600.com had at PC4 was one of mine.
Joe got it from me some time ago to be used to help in the
controller scheme of Castles & Kings.
C&K will definitely be THE best 5200 Paddle game there is !!!

Lately, I have decided to just use a standard CX30 (2600 paddle)
and rewire it to work on the 5200. I will begin to offer these seperately
for use with my Digital Trak-ball J/S's.
They will also work with a Wico Ycable or Keypad

I'll post it on my site in the next week or so...

For shifting gears I used a switch i got from radio shack...

The switch works well and its better than a momentary switch (your already smashing the two fire buttons a third wears out your fingers fast).

I did my paddle like badbrad did. The 2600 paddle has locating tabs in it to keep the pot from turning.

I took a 1/2 gasket punch and made the rubber boot hole bigger.

I am selling mine soon as I need the money. It has a new rebuild kit in it as well.

It has a cool "Pitch and Catch" versus mode. Now that I have two paddle controllers (one via the PC-5200 adapter) I can enjoy this mode.
