I know, I know. These things are never completely right. Still, I thought people would like to know about it. They're doing ten a day, so only #91-100 have been named so far. Of note to Atari fans, Pitfall at #100 and Adventure at #95.

Read the rest here: http://top100.ign.com/

The list so far:

#100-Pitfall
#99-Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
#98-Master of Orion
#97-Phantasy Star II
#96-Golden Axe
#95-Adventure
#94-Wolfenstein 3-D
#93-SimCity
#92-Aces of the Pacific
#91-F-Zero

Is there a major game release in the next week that will conveniently take the #1 spot?

I'm honestly surprised any Atari games were in their top 100 at all. I guess we'll see if there are any more in the coming days.

What Atari games do you think absolutely need to be on the list for this to have any credibility at all? I'd say that Asteroids needs to be on the list.

I got dibs on Splinter Cell as #1...

I fhtey had any balls at all though: they'd pick Uniracers from the SNES as their #1 :)

So far so good... except for maybe Aces of the Pacific (which I've never played, so can't really say for sure). Good to see that they're not just listing off the EB best sellers or something.

I'm hoping Pong shows up somewhere... it deserves at least a spot in the top 100.

Nice to see Ultima Underworld on the list, although it'd be in in the Top 10 if it was my list. I really hate how these gaming websites dole out multi-part articles over a period of days or weeks just so you'll keep coming back. Put up good content and I'll keep coming back! Use stupid gimmicks and I won't!

I wouldn't be surprised, but I'm 99% certain the #1 game will be less than 1 year old. I rememeber when NextGen proclaimed Mario 64 to be the best game ever before it was even released. Unfortunatly, most of these media types have very short memories.

It would be nice to see Manic Miner or Elite just for what they did back in their day. I think it might be Halo though, which possibly is the best modern game, but best ever?

I hope it's not Metroid Prime or Splinter Cell, I thought these are very over rated, at least Halo lived up to the hype.

I recall reading that issue of Next Gen and thinking the Top 100 was actually pretty well thought out, until that horrendous number one. I never read another issue of NG after that. I was thoroughly disgusted - because I HAD played the import Mario 64 and to this day I still think the game is crap.

Re: Metroid Prime - it shouldn't be number one, but it's top 10 in my eyes. It's the first game since the original Final Fantasy that actually DID live up to the hype in my opinion.

2600 games that need to be on there.... well, Pitfall and Adventure should have been higher so I doubt you'll see many more but I would have put Space Invaders, Kaboom!, Demon Attack, and maybe even Marble Craze in the top 100 somewhere. Asteroids is a personal favorite of mine but I don't really believe it's that good a translation... I just love it anyways.

Half-Life should be in the top 10. I'm fairly sure it will be.

Wolfenstein 3D placing ABOVE Ultima Underworld? I don't think I agree with that one. Both are good games, but Ultima Underworld is definitely better.

While I think it would be wonderful to see Marble Craze on the list, there's no way they'll include a game that very few of their readers will be familiar with. There may be other 2600 games on the list, but they'll be ones that everyone has heard of. If Marble Craze did manage to make the list, I'd probably have to scramble to make a large batch of carts. ;)

EGM really dissed on 2600 games, "so bad they killed the industry"

If you want to see the EGM lists themselves,
The November 1997 list:

And the January 2002 , with comparison to the previous list:

Agreed on all points. I think that a list like this would consider Adventure and Pitfall the top two 2600 games ever... and I'd be hard pressed to argue against that. Thus, I don't think we'll see any more 2600 games on there and I would be *extremely* shocked ifyou see anything older than NES on the list from here on out.

Can anyone come up with a decent way of polling to formulate a top 100? I've tried a few times but it really is extremely difficlult to coordinate the number of votes, the ranking of the votes and how to determine tie breakers and stuff. Hell, I probably couldn't come up with my own personal top 10 anymore. There's too many games that I like too much.

If anyone WANTS to try and do an AA Top 100, maybe we can bounce some ideas around here. I'd LOVE to see a Top 100 done by gamers, not editors. Editors have too much at stake to put an older but probably more deserving game at No. 1.

Ugh. They should retitle those lists to something more appropriate than "The best ever." Clearly they aren't students of history.

You know, I just looked over the EGM list from 2002 and it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I mean, Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night are in the top ten. Gotta agree with both of those...

if we were to do a list, id suggest having a top 30 of each major era (joystick - oddessy through colecovision, joypad - NES through Jaguar, thumbstick - Saturn through today). i never did like ranking games, as there is no fair way to compare Pitfall to Grand Theft Auto. Id also suggest that if you do a poll, do not let users rank the games themselves. Simply ask "what are your 20 Favorite games made before 1985", and give each game listed an equal point, rather than weighing them, this will give a better idea of what games are not near the top, as some person can be a jackass and give their nubmer 1 vote to Pac Man or ET and give it a lot of points and skewing the results.

If they're smart, they won't list any games from the current generation of consoles at all. But of course...they be dumb.

I think I disagree with the overall "can't know if new games are good" sentiment. I really do think that games are improving overall, with new technology letting designers do exciting new things, and the smart ones can learn from the elegance and simplicity of the past.

I remember an amusing sidenote about a parallel contest, I think they had reader's choice for best game of all time, and in 1997 they were like "and stop voting for N64 Zelda...it's not even out yet!" (Though of course, the resulting game is a reasonable canidate for the position.)
