I have not for a long time, had a joystick attatched to my system, and decided it was long over due.

I attatched a generic 2 button game pad.
I set it up, in the control panel, under WinXP.
It is calibrated and works fine in other DOS and Windows games.

However, I can not get it to work in the latest DOS or Windows version of z26

Was support removed (readme.txt still says it should be automatic)?
Has anyone else experienced this?

The DOS version of z26 accesses the gameport directly. If your joypad is an USB model, or if WinXP blocks direct access to the gameport too, then your gamepad wouldn't work with z26. Since you can't have direct hardware access under Windows, we had to remove the old joystick code from the Windows version of z26. We haven't written a replacement yet, so there is no joystick support in the most current version of z26 either. But I'll try to get some basic joystick support done for the next release. It shouldn't be too difficult with SDL.

You might try a keyboard remapping program...that runs alongside the emu and intercepts joystick movements and translates them into keypresses for you. If you have a GRiP-compatable pad, you can use Gravis Xperience. Be sure to check Z26 as being the active Dos game in it's profile. The remapper is available at the Gravis homesite under Support.

It is not USB, plugs directly into gameport.
But at least that clearifies things.

The readme.txt should be updated to reflect this.

Meanwhile, Joykeys, is working for the 2x windows version of z26.
Unfortunately, it means manually starting a second program.

(I use a package that mostly automates everything from one program.)
(While I could rewrite all my code, it would be just about that time that joystick support would be reintroduced.)

Bother ;)

Thanks.

That's kinda why I mentioned the GRiP manager...as it loads on it's own when you run a profiled app. :)

I tried that one, but it didn't work.

I've used Joystick 2 Mouse for my MAME arcade for some time.
.
The name is misleading.

http://atzitznet.no-.../Joy2Mouse3.exe

It is free and works with every joystick I've tried.

And yes, it is now running on my 2600 box.

It is kool, as it now runs my front end too.

With a 4 button gamepad, you can assign ESC, Reset and C/B&W (along with directions and fire of course ;)

Not a problem... the real question I had, was weather this was a quirk in my setup, or z26.
So, now that I know it is z26, I can do this until joystick support is restored to z26.

Just to keep you updated: We have just released a new version of z26 with basic joystick support put back in. You can't map your preferred functions on the buttons yet, but at least you should be able to use the first two joysticks from your Windows settings with z26 now. As always you can get the newest version at http://www.whimsey.com/z26/z26.html.

Just DLed the latest Windows version of Z26 and got it running using Game Launcher as my front end. Other than having the sound being upped an octave, it's pretty good.
