Nintendo ES
Nintendo64/Playstation 1

NES: In college I played on friends' Nintendo ES systems a few times, but was not impressed. Even today I don't enjoy any of the games except Super Mario and Tetris. I think I was too busy with the Commodore=64/Amiga to be impressed by a "lowly" 8-bit console. (Note: Never saw a Genesis in action.)

N64/PS1: I saw the games being played by my younger nephews and on television, but the graphics did not impress me one bit, and I totally skipped the 32/64-bit generation. (Not until I saw FF10 did my jaw drop.)

I'm enjoying the games now as a retro-gamer, but the graphics still do not impress.

I honestly can say...None. Just about every system from Intellivision to XBox has been impressive to me graphics wise...when they first came on the scene that is. Looking back some seem dated ...But when they were new I remember checking out everything from Genisis to Jaguar and thinking WOW!! Graphics can't get much better than that. Then a few years goes by.... and BLAM a new fresh set of consoles. I wonder if it'll ever end!!!

ST/Amiga era - maybe I was playing with girls at the time, but I owned both but didn't really get into them.

I guess when you're 17 there's just better things to do.

I used to think so too, but now that we've approached live TV realism (playing Madden 2001 is almost as good as a real football game on TV, and that's two years old) I think the borderline to what the improvements can be will be so miniscule we won't even notice. Consoles may be able to render more polygons, smaller and faster, but it's not going to substantially change the quality of the games. There's really not much place forward console technology could leap at this point BUT virtual reality.

Virtual boy != virtual reality in my book. It was a borderline 3-D, monochromatic color, headache inducing nighmare. REAL virtual reality would be completely different.

i can agree with that - i really didnt like every game pratically being the same thing - i did enjoy a few games, but i dont think it was as great as it was claimed to be - 3DO's M2 would have been much better ;)
Mario Kart 64 was enjoyable, Perfect Dark was cool and a few others, but other than that 70$-100$ games that looked like each other to me wasnt worth it

Hey Jag I like your retro avatar, it's like it's 2002 again ;)

I didn't really get into the 16bit systems. There's only a handful of games from the Genesis and SNES that keep me coming back for more. Just a weird personal thing I know because I loved the NES, SMS, and 7800 before these consoles and I like the PS1, 3DO, Saturn, and Jag that came after these guys.

I haven't gotten too much into the TG-16 so maybe there's hope that I'll get into some 16bit gaming. I just didn't like the type of games that came out between 90-95, too many Street Fighters and Rpgs for my taste. I like some of the sports games on the Genny and Mario Kart on SNES but that's about it.

Hmm...

I guess for me it was the 3D0/CDi/whatever systems, if you can call them a "generation." I remember when they were advertised on infomercials and they cost like $600-$700. Didn't interest me at all.

[b]hah yeah man time to get back to the really good stuff ;)
16bit on the SNES was great - lots of great stuff to choose from - i wasted a lot of money on rentals when iwas younger for that friggin system ;)

ill have to go with Saturn/PSX/N64. the "3D explosion" was butt ugly in my book. The frame rates were too choppy, and the textures were often disgusting. There are a lot of good games from this generation, but it wasnt until the Dreamcast was running 3D graphics at a solid 60fps that i became truly impressed with 3D on consoles.

PSX/N64: I didn't see the point. I went straight from Master System to PSX and I playe4d the Master System more still. The N64 was a waste for nintendo, espically the cartridges too. The Saturn is the better one of these three, with some high quailty graphics and a tending to stay with 2D games.

Yea the Saturn was great, though a bit overlooked, most people include the Dreamcast within the last generation, and for get about Saturn, but I think those two (and the 64) were the best of the generation.

Sorry for the double post, but I again have never been dissapointed in a certain generation, but I am dissapointed in one handheld in particular. Tiger Game.com. That thing had a lot of potential, but was very slow, unresponsive, choppy, because of its very weak hardware. Tiger used good names from their LCD game licenses, and asanine raped the titles.

I think the cartridges and controllers put a lot of people off, but I for one still love the system. There are a lot of good games for it, though there's a lot of bad ones, too. Super Mario 64, Star Wars Rogues Squadron/Racer/Shadows of the Empire, Duke Nukem 3D (though I liked the PC version better), Duke Nukem Zero Hour, good stuff. I even liked Blues Brothers 2000, of course that's coming from a huge SNL fan.

Turok 2, Superman, Blast Corps (which seems to get decent reviews, though I just don't like it as much as I should) are some of the bad ones.

With every system that passes, everyone says "How can it get any better?!?!". Today's graphics are so good, it makes me wonder if this quality can be noticeably surpassed. I guess people said the same thing back in the day, though.

i dont know how i could forget about the PSX era - i mean it was alright how they came about - but a whole heap of the games- in my view- clearly sucked. it was "this is another 3d game and its brand new, now play it" and most people followed along ;) But the ps did have its few games that were great and worth playing over and voer again
The Saturn had a heap of garbage itself, but it also had its great games as well
oh well, im tired

I was left cold by the whole 16-bit era. Paying WAY over the odds for games that were, by and large, the same side-on, horizontally scrolling platformers. Not only that but all of them seemed to have dire graphics, and I'm not talking about the technical proficiency of the machines here, more the actual graphics design.
I can't remember seeing anything on the 16-bits that couldn't have been done on 8-bit (although with more lo-res graphics).
There were a few saving graces from Japan but that's about it.
I quit gaming from 91 to 97 when I bought a Playstation.

I have to say, I loved the Playstation. Although the whole polygon 3D thing has gone pretty stale now, it was great at the time.
Whereas in the 16 bit era, 3D meant chucking objects at you in a frenetic arcade style (StarFox, MarioKart etc.), the 3D of the Playstation/Saturn era seemed to focus more on worlds you could explore, a more thoughtful use of the medium.
Although it looks crap now, I remember playing G-Police in a store and being completely blown away by this world they'd stuck me in.
Wonderful stuff.

Hear! Hear! Well put. I actually got out of the house in those days. I wish gaming sucked now so I would play more basketball or tennis :D
