I agree!  I have 3 PC games that refuse to work, because I my computer is too old.  It's frustrating to waste your money on osftware, and then find out it doesn't work.

Frustrating in a different way are the PC games that won't work because my computer is too new...I wouldn't mind firing up my machine for a game of Wing Commander one or two or the like.

Actually, I think one company makes an emulation package for PCs that make it act like an old DOS PC, memory management and sound blaster systems settings and all. More powerful than just trying something like MoSlo and hoping it works.

Do you really think that current consoles are not powerful enough? Frankly, I can't imagine how the PS3 or Gamedodecahedron could really improve on the graphics, since I already can't see any blockiness or anything. Making a Gamecube cost twice as much so that it can throw around a few more polygons (that I'll never notice anyways) is mostly a waste of time.

My brother is 29, and works with computers a lot, and is still impressed by the Dreamcast's graphics, and claims that his computer (a pretty decent one mind you) has a hard time pulling off the same stuff.

So, I don't really see the problem here. Consoles are pretty powerful as they are, are you hoping for a 32X for your PS2 or something?

I ment a choice for the player. If they wanted the games to run faster etc. I mean easy to upgrade hardware.

The problem is that it's never really a choice for the player. Sure, some games will come out that won't require it... but eventually you'll see a big name game come out that does nice stuff on it, and suddenly everyone is programming stuff that requires this upgrade. Look at the Gameboy Color... for quite a while people were programming games that worked in black & white as well, but even Nintendo gave up on that when they made Zelda DX and Mario Bros DX and such. Then you either had to get the new Gameboy Color, or be content with your B&W games (I actually did the latter... and bought a GBA when they came out). This same thing probably would have happened with the N64 expansion pak if the system had been more popular and survived longer.

Frankly, I'm rather disappointed that consoles are becoming more like computers... eventually, you'll have to be concerned if your hard drive is big enough to run a game. Bah, back in my days we had consoles without hard drives at all, and we liked it that way!

One noticeable lack is non-Graphic RAM. Like take GTA3 or Vice City; the reason you have so much car disappearance and general non-permanence is directly tied to the machines lack of RAM. I imagine the PS3 versions of GTA will feel a lot more like a consistent 'world' than the previous renditions.

There's always room for improvement in the graphics, but I think we're at the point where it's no longer a stopping point for a new game; designers can make pretty much anything they can imagine, just not quite as prettily as they might hope.

If the console companies were to release the most up to date hardware, sure you might get better games but the cost of the console would be so high that it would limit the market to just a few well-heeled owners.

The consoles are powerful enough right now and reasonably priced (under $200) so that most people can buy them without having to take a loan out.

Also the better the hardware, the longer the development cycle becomes to develop a game that takes advantage of the extra horsepower provided by the new hardware. That means fewer games that truly tax the system or release a lot of decent games that don't age well when the truly sophisticated games come out.

I think the current way of doing things are fine. When the newer consoles come out, I will wait till they drop the price to a level that I can afford it rather than jumping the bandwagon.
