Do you really think that current consoles are not powerful enough? Frankly, I can't imagine how the PS3 or Gamedodecahedron could really improve on the graphics, since I already can't see any blockiness or anything. Making a Gamecube cost twice as much so that it can throw around a few more polygons (that I'll never notice anyways) is mostly a waste of time.
My brother is 29, and works with computers a lot, and is
still impressed by the Dreamcast's graphics, and claims that his computer (a pretty decent one mind you) has a hard time pulling off the same stuff.
So, I don't really see the problem here. Consoles are pretty powerful as they are, are you hoping for a 32X for your PS2 or something?

I ment a choice for the player. If they wanted the games to run faster etc. I mean easy to upgrade hardware.
The problem is that it's never really a choice for the player. Sure, some games will come out that won't require it... but eventually you'll see a big name game come out that does nice stuff on it, and suddenly everyone is programming stuff that requires this upgrade. Look at the Gameboy Color... for quite a while people were programming games that worked in black & white as well, but even Nintendo gave up on that when they made Zelda DX and Mario Bros DX and such. Then you either had to get the new Gameboy Color, or be content with your B&W games (I actually did the latter... and bought a GBA when they came out). This same thing probably would have happened with the N64 expansion pak if the system had been more popular and survived longer.
Frankly, I'm rather disappointed that consoles are becoming more like computers... eventually, you'll have to be concerned if your hard drive is big enough to run a game. Bah, back in my days we had consoles without hard drives at all, and we
liked it that way!
