Well I bought TUROK: Evolutions at BB for $9.99 - 25%.
I had heard what a piece of crap it was but have always liked the Turoks I've played (Turok and Turok 2) so I figured for that price I'd give it a go. Now I only played for a few minutes before I had to stop but WOW!! This game looks awesome so far. Smooth. I like the fact you can interact with the enviroment. Hit a small tree with your ax..It come crashing down. I like the realistic dinos like Triceritops and Stegasaurus. I saw the main villian in EGM, and I'll admit he looked LAME as hell. But still as far as FPS go, this game looks perfect. Can someone elaborate on why this game gets such a bad rap??? Have I just not got into the game enough??? I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I give it another go.

One of the things that annoyed me about the game was the long, long load times. Die in a level and you can go use the bathroom, get a bottle of pop from the fridge, smoke a ciggie, then come back and the level you just died on might be loaded back up.

Plus I had some cheap, cheap deaths in the game; for example something was killing me in the river (croc, maybe) but I never, never saw it despite turning 360 degree's, looking up and down, etc...

Never enjoy the new Turok at all; the first one on the N64 is still my favorite.

The only problem with the new turok is the save points being too far apart, So too much back tracking.

I enjoyed turok on the ps2 more then i enjoyed Halo on the box,, Just mho

Moycon, as a classic gaming enthusiast, you have loads more patience and tolerance than the typical gamers today. That's why you enjoy the game -- because it certainly isn't horrible, not to me at least -- but it is still a bit mediocre in ways and has some flaws that (evidently) many gamers couldn't handle, so the game was panned. Well, that's my attempt to explain it.

I remember playing through the first couple levels when it was new, at the mall Xbox kiosk, and I was loving it. The flying levels were not fun & killed me off though, and that's all the further I played. The 2nd level, where you see Raptors, I initially loved the sense of Jurassic Park / raptor hunting. But after a few plays, I realized how easy it was to be stealthy and there was no challenge. But I died (even on level 1) by some falls from blind jumps and that frustrated me. FPP jumping -- ick!

One thing I didn't like was (for example) in the first level, you can walk up to the Stego and hack away at it with a battle axe and it doesn't run or do anything at all. It just moves. But on the other hand, the trampling adult Trike is over across the pond -- in fact I shot it once and it actually fell into the pond and sunk into it!!!! (before its carcass disappeared).

I've seen the game for really cheap prices (GCN), I think I'm picking it up too. There's not many dinosaur games out there.

"Rambo in Jurassic Park" is the best way I can describe a Turok game.

It's amazing how grating the loadtimes were.

I wanted to like this. I was hoping it was finally a decent deathmatch on GC. Luckily, Time Splitters 2 came out not too long after.

I tried to like it, but it just comes across as bad, frustrating but not in a good way. And the story I always tell is my cousin was dithering over what game I should get him for his bithday on the way to the store and laughed when I said "you decide in the next 5 minutes or YOU'RE GETTING TUROK!!!". Even to this day, Turok is our joke threat when we can't decide what game to play next...

Sorry to change subjects, but Time SPlitters 2 -- I had forgotten about this game but a friend said it was 'awesome' about a year ago. Any advice about it? What kind of game is it? 1player fun?

Yes, it's an excellent game in both one player and multiplayer forms.

It has a set of very cool one player missions, all set in different historical periods. (And the one player missions can also be played 2 player co-op, though I think that is in some ways more difficult...) Each level has Easy/Medium/Hard mode as well, and each setting seems to have more to do, not just throwing tougher baddies at you. So if you like things easy, you can pretty much see every level, and for the people who are into challenges, I think the hard levels are really difficult...beyond my ability/time I'm willing to sink into it, anyway.

I had just as much fun one player with a series of challenges, different game types you can play to unlock extra characters, boards, and gamemodes in multiplayer. I'm not a big fan of having to play single player to unlock things in multi, but they do it pretty fairly. Those challenges are pick up and play fun, shorter than the story mode missions.

Deathmatch is excellent as well. If only the PS2 version had come through with the rumored online play! I woulda bought it even though I already had it on GC.

I think this was by the golden eye/perfect dark team, and it shows. Very high production values, some interesting character, variety of multiplayer, decent AI (I think), fun weapon sets.

Oh, and there's even a "make your own level/mission" mode, which was fun to tool around with, but paled pretty quickly.

A great game overall.

I agree with kisreal. Time Splitters 2 is a pretty good game, but if you play on the Easy level expect to get through it in about 2 hours.

I would have wished for bigger maps on the multiplayer mode though...

Why do you make 2 hours sound like a bad thing?

Like I said, there are 3 settings of difficulty, and each harder setting adds a lot, sometimes the level is like twice as long.

I think having easier levels that let a newbie get the feel for the breadth of the game, but optional difficulty settings that add the depth for the person who likes a challenge, and gives that person new things to see, is about ideal...

Well it's like songs you really, really like. They always seem to be too short. Like Blur's Song 2. I LOVE that song but it's too short.
I wasn't saying it's a bad thing, just saying the Easy mode had very short game play time. I haven't played on the harder modes yet, but when I finish all the other games I probably will. I do like the idea that the game is somewhat different with the different difficulties, unlike other games where they just make the enemies harder to kill or send out more of them.
Although in Serious Sam more enemies to kill meant more fun...

No worries about the name. Mispelling it, and various geo-political overtones, are making me use "kirkjerk" for more purposes these days.

And I'm probably shoving some karma from a different argument I was in here, where people were making compaints about games being too easy, and I think accessability to non-hardcore gamers is good Though the conclusion everyone could agree on are multiple difficulties are a good thing...

Well I've gotten into the game a bit now. Up to Chapter 3 so far. The first two chapters are pretty damn easy Cafeman, it gets much harder to pick off the enemies from a distance later on. I do not like the fact if you die you have to start over with all enemies back alive. I've played through one chapter section about 5 times, and get a bit farther each time, its a little annoying but not too bad.

The load times aren't that bad. I own RUNE and if you want to see some shit ass load times play that. TUROK is speedy in comparison. The only gripe I have so far is the lack of interaction with the enviroment so far. You can chop down some trees, but so far I see no reason to. It would be nice to knock down a tree and be able to get up to cliffs you couldn't before using the felled tree. Also I wish you could climb the tree's for the same reason. Gives a sense of exploration. Other awesome games like Deus Ex suffer from the same issue, but it's a minor quibble.

I heard the frame rate for the new TUROK sucks...and the graphics were only slightly better than N64...WTF were those people smoking? The graphics ROK!!! I love it on some levels when you can see immense sauropods in the back ground, and coming across half eaten carcasses of unfortunate plant eaters. At first I didn't like the flying parts, and really the parts where you HAVE to move forward kinda suck...But when you are in an open area (shades of Rouge Squadron) the flying sequences are damn good.

I wont even get into the AWESOME arsonal at your disposal. My favorite is the TEK BOW with explosive, or poison tips.
This game is worth picking up for $9.99 at Blockbusters. Hell I'd have been satisfied if I'd paid $20 bucks for it. moycon says don't listen to the negativity. Pick this game up and give it a go.

I bought Turok yesterday. Got it for $12.99 used at EB , minus my discount w/their card.

Last night I played up until the 3rd or 4th flying level.

The load times are the worst thing -- when you die in a , then gotta wait half a minute to start over, that can get a wee bit annoying. The frame rate is fluid though, the graphics are rather vibrant in the GCN version! I think I like the Cube Turok visuals better than the Xbox version, which had a softer less interesting look. Since I had played these levels before (last summer at the kiosks), I breezed though them. The music and sound FX are pretty cool IMO, a couple times I got all frightened, thinking Raptors were going to pounce on me, but it was just the thematic music building up!

I agree -- this game is worth playing at such a low cost. I'll keep playing , can't wait to get to more challenging parts.

it is annoying having to constantly start from the beginning and do everything al lover when you die, thats why i had to use the invincibility cheat, i dont normally use cheats, but in this game you have to make the xception

I almost used a cheat today because as others have pointed out it sucks ass to start all the way at the begining once you die especially toward the end of the level. But I managed to get through after trying "one more time" Got the flame thrower YEEEEHAAA now and have been frying dinos in mass quantities!!!

My favorite now is the poison tipped arrows tho. I get a cheap thrill watching some evil dino dude puking up his intestines up before keeling over.

I played some more yesterday, finally got past all the bird levels. The next level starts off with a big ole Rex chowing down on a fallen brachiosaur -- explosive tip arrows did him in as he approached me for another kill! I love parts like this, where I'm contending with the wild killer animals like Raptors and Rexes and Gators. The actual sniping kind of action irritates me though. These dino-humans are dull adversaries. Anyway, I took down the helicopter craft in this level but was killed later -- and shut it off, didn't feel like going through it all again.

One of the best scenes I ever played involving dinosaurs was Tomb Raider, when Lara stumbles into the lost world within the icy caves, and that huge Rex roars and stomps toward her! I hope there are more huge beasts to take down in Turok as well.

Man, I don't like those bird levels either. They weren't particularly hard, but I kept thinking "this isn't the type of game I want to play here". Are there more bird levels later in the game too?

I'm up to chapter 6 and pretty far into it. Still no other flying levels, but I'm sure there will be. The game is getting kinda repetative at this point. Altho I'll tell ya the creatures start coming out in force!! There's still little touches that keep me going. There's one part where your in a marshy area and there are cute little frogs hopping every where. They tend to bunch together, thats where a well placed explosive arrow will kill the lot of them. Thing is, The chunks of flesh and gore that fly up when you kill these tiny cute frogs look like they are from a TREX!!!! Ewwwwwwww!!
