Just picked up a PSX at a garage sale (C$20, including a dual-shock controller), and now I'm wondering what games I should be picking up.

My tastes run to the exploration/adventure type games. FPS (and other ultra-violent games) are out to keep my wife happy. Kid friendly games as well for my under 3 year old son. (He loves Mario64, though I'm getting tired of playing it.)

And how much should I expect to pay for a used PSX game (not copies)? Any other words of advice?

Oh, any recommendations/cautions for memory cards?

The Parasite Eve's are great, and the Drivers. Castlevania:Symphony, I played through twice when I had Strep Throat for 3 months.

Umm gosh there were so many games that were fun, The Army Men games were great... Hercules although I never did beat that game....

Try picking up Vagrant Story. Plays alot like Parasite Eve. Alot of roleplaying features with action and strategy involved as well. Also has a good story and the way the game is setup is great. One of may favorite all time games for the PS.

Breakout is a fun game for kids since the game adjusts the skill level as you play.

Ms Pac Man - Maze Madness is also fun as well as Pac Man World 20th Anniversary.

If you like reference to pop culture, I would recommend the Gex series of games.

If you like playing classic games, I would recommend the Namco Museum CDs, Arcade's Greatest Hits by Williams or The Midway Collection 2.

My general rule is that a complete used Playstation game should be in the area of $10 or less, unless there's a specific reason otherwise (usually because it's relatively uncommon because it didn't sell very well, but now everybody wants it).

Gee, no ultra-violence? I mostly play games where you shoot stuff. I don't generally play exploration/adventure games, but I hear that the Tomb Raider series were pretty popular exploration/adventure games (unless your wife also disapproves of "Boob Raider"). And I recommend Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo to pretty much everybody (but it's relatively uncommon, so you'll probably have to pay at least $20).

RPG Maker. And a Dex Drive, so you can download games people made with RPG Maker from the web.

If you can find it, Geom Cube is pretty good. And I agree that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is OUTSTANDING. My favorite PS game ev-ah.

Hmmm... let's see... Jet Moto's pretty good... Galaga is TERRIBLE... I dunno. The PSX library really didn't age too well to be honest.

Every dex-drive type Playstation thing I've ever bought was dead right out of the box, and they were all new. I recommend... Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (THE Castlevania game, for now), Crash Team Racing (Naughty Dog's answer to Mario Kart. Damn good game), Ace Combat 3, R4 (Ridge Racer 4), Jumping Flash 2 (bottomless pit flatform-triple-jumping), and if you feel like modding it, Poi Poi 2 (like Bomberman meets Powerstone) and Choro Q Jet: Rainbow Wings (fun SD jet fighting game).

two great games that I just kept playing and playing were the original Grand Theft Auto (top down view) but this is not for the children and the classic Gran Turismo.

I spent too many hours on them 2

If you want a game that will last near forever then go with any Final Fantasy game.

yeah, Skull Monkeys is great! Ridge Racer 4 has already been listed here, but may I suggest you get it with the JogCon controller (which the game was designed for) - it adds a lot.
Of the Tomb Raiders, number 1 is probably the most fun (and the only one where you really raid tombs:) )
oh yeah, Xenogears is good for some late night roleplaying - good plot you can really get your teeth into.

On memory cards - do yourself a favour and just buy the Sony cards. the most reliable by far, that also goes for controllers, if it ain't by Sony (or namco) then avoid.

I've never had a 3rd party memory card fail for any of my systems, but I've had two Sony PSX cards and two VMUs blow out under normal use.

Now when someone asks about the PSX, you can't tell whether they're talking about the original PlayStation, or the new upcoming Entertainment center thingamajig.

I've heard that it's the "large capacity" third-party memory cards that are the most prone to failure. So when I buy third-party memory cards I stick to ones that are standard size (15 save blocks) and I haven't had any problems.

And controllers--I liked the MadCatz controllers ("Dual Force"), but I've broken two of them, so I'm afraid that the affair is over. The ALPS controller is solid, but it needs large hands, and good luck finding one these days.

I had a "large capacity" third party card go down on me hard. First problem was when I was trying to "reset" the PS1 after a mistake in FF9, and rapidly cycled the power off and back on. POOF! All save data gone. After that I bought a DexDrive and I was trying to back up data from it using a card reader on my PC, and thought once I had cycled through it I could just reformat each "page" of virtual memory card. WRONG. One reformat and the whole thing went soggy, now it doesn't even access properly. It's a $15 door stop, if it wasn't so small that the door swings right over the top of it.

It's just like when Sony released the smaller Playstation and called it the PSOne, and you couldn't tell if someone was just talking about an original Playstation (as opposed to the PS2) or if they were referring to the new PSOne unit.

If he already has a PC, why the hell blow $20 on Quake 2 for PSX when it can be had for $10 on the PC?
