I was pleasantly surprised to find Nintendo released a preview disk that could be purchased. It has 5 playable demos and several movies. It is formatted much like the preview disks at the Gamecube kiosks.

Where I picked mine up had a deal where you got one free when you purchased a 'cube. However they were also selling them for $9.95. The funny thing is on the back of the box it says "Not for individual resale" so I don't know if they were supposed to be selling them? :?

But for $10, I think it's worth it. It has Splinter Cell, Soul Caliber II, Sonic DX, and others. :)

Sounds cool. Which games are playable?

If Soul Caliber II is playable then I'm definitely getting it. :)

Fromwhat I hear SC 2 IS playable but only as two characters: Nightmare and Sophitia's clone/daughter/replacement whose name escapes me at the moment.

w00t???? All I'v seen is a video of Link kicking someguys ass and I must
have this game. The original is still one of the greatest fighters ever.

I love my Gamecube but I think Nintendo has a lot of balls to sell a demo disc for $10. I went to TRU and they were sitting next to the new PS2 Jampack which has twice the playable demos and is $5.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea... I mean, this isn't Super Smash Bros or something. I was under the impression that the Soul Calibur series was one of the more serious fighting games out there, but this kind of screws up that perception. I just don't see how Link fits in there.

However, I'd love to give some of these games a try...

An unlockable. The gimmick is that each system's version of Soul Calibur II has a different unlockable. The PS2 has Heihachi and the XBox has Spawn.

Not correct. Link (and the other two systems' exclusive characters) are open from the beginning. There are, of course, lots of unlockable characters (including my beloved Sophitia), but given the fact that the exclusive characters actually appear on the packaging, I don't think it would have been wise to lock them away.

Here's a look at the Japanese version (with details on Link, etc.) from IGN:

Oh, and the $9.95 price point isn't really Nintendo's idea. The disc was meant to be a giveaway with the purchase of a GCN or a Game Boy Player or a few other package deals (hence the text on the back - identical to that on the free "Ocarina of Time" packaging).

However, once the discs arrived, some stores began selling them for $9.95. They sold so well that Nintendo went ahead and told everyone else they could sell at $9.95 if they wanted to.

Ugh, SC2...

I've beaten the game by hitting one button over and over and over and over and over. Not even touching the stick! The game is pitiful as far as AI goes. And the multiplayer, oh god...nothing but Ivy BS. I wanted to like that game, but it just blew too badly.

sdstuff64, I feel your pain. GameStop sold out of them before I could get one, and Target and WalMart also didn't have any. I had to resort to buying one off ebay for a total of $20 with the shipping included.

Better to spend $20 and try out a handful of games than spend $50 on a game I don't like. Of course, that's just my excuse!

And what difficulty was it on? You can't do that on any level above Hard, if you try, you'll have your arse handed to you on a plate. True the AI isn't as good as VF4Evo but it still is a difficult challenge.

As for 2 player action... wtf?! You've not tried to figure out how to beat her. She isn't that hard even in the hands of a good player. Plenty of better characters out there. Just because there is the ranged sword, doesn't make her invincible.

Sounds like you haven't given it enough time or enough play to properly judge its merits. It's the second best fighter out there after VF4Evo...

Well see this is from TOURNAMENT play...and it wasn't really me doing this. Literally everyone in those tourneys picked Ivy and anyone who didn't got ran off the machine badly. See I was playing the arcade version (so I don't know what difficulty the machine is at).
SC2 is definitely not one of the best fighters out there. That title is reserved for the 2d ones ;p
