'Atari Inc confirmed today development of a new, next generation, console had been underway for some time.

Jack Reynolds, leader of the project "Phoenix" development team told the press that limited information on the design and planned specifications of the new console would be made public within "a few days".

"This is without a doubt a machine that can beat anything Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft can currently throw at us" said Reynolds.

The out of the blue announcement suggests there was a lot more behind the Infogrames name change than previously thought.

When asked if development of the console would impact on licensing deals and software development for existing platforms, Reynolds declined to comment.'

If this is true, Atari is stupid! They are bringing it to market to early. They need to launch it shortly before the other NExt Gen consoles..... not two years before.... it will meet the same fate as the dreamcast!

Coleco announced today that they will be releasing a new console.

The head of project ColecoVision2 (or CV2 as it will be known) was quoted as saying "This console will be better than anything even the new Atari Console "Phoenix".

P.S.

I don't have any way to cite my sources or give a reputable link so just take my word for it OK.

Ok...... some saw the funny side, some saw the obvious, some didn't so before everyone gets all steamed up about it.......

The real subject is this:

Do you think Atari (Infogrames) could launch a new console?, do you think they have the resources and the cash?

If so, do you think there is a possibility they actually would launch it, would you go out and buy it anyway because it was "Atari"?

Would features would you like to see on a new Atari console?

Sure they could. It'd be the last thing they ever DID, but they COULD.

I wouldn't buy it unless there were killer titles that I couldn't get on any other system. Nothing that Infogrames has released up till now would meet those requirements. Ikaruga is nice but I wouldn't buy a system to get it.

I think it's pretty obvious now that the market can't sustain three major systems duking it out. Historically, one always fades out (Saturn, TG16, 3DO) and two survivors share (SNES and Genny, PSX and N64) the market. Until the PS2 ran away with the race, anyways. With the dismal market share that Nintendo and Microsoft are fighting over, what's really in it for them to try?

Releasing a console now would be the worst thing Atari could do. They have neither the financial power, nor do they really have anything to make their console "special"... Atari has a lot of nice licenses under their belt at the moment, but certainly not enough to make a whole system around them.

Come back with this question 5 years from now, and maybe they'll be in a position to do something like this. Otherwise, whatever they make would probably fail worse than the Jaguar.

I really think way FAR down the line, their could be another console to compete against Microsoft.

I personally think XBox 2 has a chance to overthrow the PS3. I also think years down the road Sony could go under in the console market. The Japanese market is in a big slump. Plus, Japanese games don't sell as well in American as they use to.

I think 10-15 years from now, MS will have a monopoly in the console business, with somone trying to fight for little market share sort of like apple is doing now in the OS business.

So yes, I think in a few years Sony will be knoced down.

God, I hope not. Although I'd like to see what Steve Jobs could do for a console. A machine with Pixar-style graphics and the style and reliability of the Mac OS...*drool*

You know, even without it the game qualifies as softcore porn. Unreal. Or perhaps, too real. :P

As much as we would like to see an awesome Atari console that puts the other systems to shame, something like this would cost a great deal of money and time to develop. The new Atari lacks the money to truly accomplish this at this time. Even with all of Microsloth's money, they have been struggling to get the Xbox to catch up with the Sony Playstation 2.

Atari should stick to writing software for all the consoles system and keep building up their financial reserves as well as building up their stock price. Only after they have tons of money (that might be several years, if ever) should they begin to consider creating a new console.
