I just sold my final GC game today. All that's left is MP & ED. I've been severely disappointed with the Gamecube lineup. Why? Well basically I was hoping to have the same great games I enjoyed on the Nintendo64: Mario, Zelda, Turok, Banjo, et cetera.

But no such luck. All of the sequels were either boring or ridiculously easy. i.e. Not fun. And other games have bailed from Nintendo's console.

So now my Gamecube library is almost nil.

Thanks for sharing that with us. We're all better people now that we know about your plight with the GC.

Haven't these "classic gaming" forums taught you already that you should never get rid of your games lest you regret it 20 years later? :P

Call it a hunch, but I doubt that Wind Waker is going to become 2023's Chase the Chuckwagon... especially when they're giving the game away with consoles

As for the Gamecube, I've actually been really impressed with what I've seen for it. I recently got a bunch of money for graduating, and I'm thinking of spending some of it on a Gamecube finally.

And a big whoopty shit goes through the crowd.

I love my Cube, just spent 2 solid hours with Super Monkey Ball 2...there are probably 10-15 other games I'd like to get for it, but monetary reasons keep me from getting them right now.

I think it is the most underrated of the newer consoles, some great games, admttedly some a bit on the easy side, but I really enjoy being able to finish a game once in a while.

I loves me GC, though there haven't been as many impressive games (for me) as I thought there would be. You know what it needs? Duke Nukem!

I always defend the cube, which makes me look so fanboyish, but I really like the Cubes lineup, I cant complain, even if only Nintendo made games for it, there are unique diverse titles that are very enjoyable, and i really enjoy coming back to, such as Pikmin, Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario Sunshine, and Animal Crossing. And its such an eye catcher at gatherings, everyone loves getting together to play Mario Party and Smash Bros. I have been very pleased with the cube, despite what some critics may say about it.

Sadly, Duke Nukem Forever has been cancelled, according to the Nintendo website.

Although there aren't a great percentage of great games for the machine (though that can also be attributed to Sony and M$'s systems), I must say, the Gamecube is the first Nintendo system since the original gameboy that I've been interested enough in to own.
Zelda: Wind Waker is also the first Miyamoto game that I've actually really enjoyed. Maybe the games aren't that difficult but, hey, if it's difficulty you crave, Ikagura is out now.
I must finally admit that, despite it being M$, I like the ideas behind the Xbox hardware, particularly Xbox live - really ingenious. But, I haven't seen any games that would make me want to part with any money yet.
I bought a PS2 after my GC (just to see what the rest of the world was playing) - biggest waste of money I ever made. If it wasn't for Ico, it'd be gone by now.

The Gamecube speaks my language -- I really many like its games. I own over 10 cube games and I just bought the system last November. Lately I've been playing through Rogue Leader -- a SW fan's wet dream! I've owned it for months but put it aside as the Metroids and Zeldas and Ikarugas were released ... but I'm glad I'm back at it. Star Destroyers, B-Wings, X- and Y-wings, Death Stars, Tie Fighters, Snow Speeders and At-Ats ... AAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm in heaver! (Except when I'm cursing at the controller after losing in a mission). ;)

Super Monkey Ball, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, the 2 Zeldas, Ikaruga, Burnout, have all been great gaming experiences to me. I'm still picking up older (and cheaper) titles .. I will never catch up with the new releases.

PS2 is in the same shape that the PSX was in years ago -- it gets the most games, and some of them are pretty much must owns, but the great majority of games are mediocre. Or on other systems. Ironically, it is Sega that makes me want a PS2 the most, with VF4 and the promise of Sega Rally 3.

Agree with most of the pro-GC sentiment here. It's been a very solid lineup. Interesting that the original poster didn't talk about multiplayer, where Nintendo has been shining ever since the N64.

And actually, of all the games I'd consider getting rid of, Metroid is surprisingly way up there. Very enjoyable, but so big and linear that I can't see myself coming back to it all that often, except maybe once years from now.

I'm 30 years old. No one in my age bracket wants to sit down and play video games (sad). No one I know anyway. That's why I sold Smash Bros Melee, because playing it by myself wasn't much fun.

As for Metroid Prime, I like science fiction so that game fits my "style". Plus I like going back and fighting the bosses.

And Eternal Darkness is just pure genious.

mmmm not to nitpick here but umkay...

The Xbox is only $179 now!

As for the Barney Box lineup, well Mario Sunshine = Recycled Mario64,
Windwaker = Cel shading childish nightmare and I'll puke if I see another DK sequel.

Just my 10 cents my 2 cents are always free.

The games magazine I buy here has conceded that it is now acceptable behaviour to hit anyone who talks about the new Zelda 'kiddy' image:)

It's a thing of great beauty is Wind Waker, really.

Yeah, Cel shading is a little over used, but really, it's a tool that Miyamoto is learning to use. It lets you focus on character's expressions in a way a more realistic style might not. (Read Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" to get how simplified figures can be more effective.)

Another DK sequel? How many have there been since the SNES....one? And it was pretty decent, with good boss battles, if a little too much on the collective side.

And of course Sunshine = Mario64 redux...actually, more people would have been happier if it was even closer to Mario64.

I'm glad the Xbox is coming down in price...eventually, it'll be worth buying for Halo and its sequel. Til then, the GC will hold me pretty well, and maybe the PS2 will get another GTA someday...

Rare made ALL the DK games since DKC.

Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3 were great games.

2 had the best story and levels though. 1 was a good start and leap into the advanced graphics generation. 3 was good and all, maybe the most features with the best mapping system, but the end sucked and while some of the bosses were very good and challenging, it was just not as good as 2. Though, I liked the Boss Battle of DKC 1 better. (Because it was easier. ;))

As for Donkey Kong 64, it was good. Not great, and going back to it now, the graphics are blurry and sub-par compared to what we have now. But I liked it, even though I never beat it. I'd rather play Banjo-Kazooie 1 and 2 than DK64.

If they released a DK game now (Not too likely with Rare belonging to MS and DK belonging to N.) I wouldn't complain. I'm just waiting for a Banjo 3. Even if it is on the Xbox. It should look really cool.

Does this mean you dislike Jet Set Radio and Dark Cloud 2 (both cel-shaded)? I suspect the real reason you dislike Wind Waker has nothing to do with the anime-style.

Anyway, I thought WW looked absolutely beautiful. I just didn't like the gameplay.

In my case, the answer is yes.

In addition to not finding the subject matter of Jet Set Radio even remotely to my liking, I absolutely despised the graphics.

I haven't seen Dark Cloud 2, so I can't comment on it. However, if it uses cel shading, I know that it is not for me.

Among the many things that ruined the Robotech video game for me was the cel shading. Everything looked like heavily outlined cutouts. It's amusing that in attempting to make the game match the animation of the show, the designers managed to make the original cheap 20 year old animation look absolutely stellar compared to year 2000 computer graphics.

And I can barely look at Monster Rancher 3. A game that would otherwise be fine except for the damnable cel shading technique which makes it one of the ugliest games of all time.

There is a Breath of Fire game for the PS2 that came out recently. I hadn't seen it at the time, but the guy I talk to at the mall game store was recommending the series to me. I thought I might pick up the PS2 implementation of the series only to look at the back of the box and see... goddamn cel shaded graphics. I certainly won't purchase that iteration of the game.

IMO, cel shading doesn't make things look like a cartoon. It makes them look substandard. It also accentuates all the unnatural movements inherent in computer animation. From looking at demos of the new Zelda game, it is the most eye numbingly bad implementation of cel shading yet.

I can only hope that cel shading is a graphics fad that will go away very soon.

All of the preceeding is just my rather strong opinion. If you like cel shaded games, then keep enjoying them. However, I don't, and, to me, the graphic style severely detracts from the games.

So what are you saying? That he wouldn't want the cartridges? Combat was given away for the 2600 but I'll bet you still have that don't you? ;)

I think you're confusing my "keep all your games" statement for "it might be valuable/rare one day"... First of all, I'm the LAST person who cares about "rarity" or monetary value of a game that I have. My point was it's good to keep your stuff for all that gaming goodness (otherwise you'd just have to get it again later). :P

So my point remains.. if any classic gaming forum has taught you anything.. KEEP all your games! :D (dupes are another matter of course) :)

I agree that it didn't look so good in Robotech, and that in general, it's a poor technique for getting something modern to look like something old. On the other hand, I think it's a worthy option for a game and world built up around it, I thought JGR looked great, sorry you find it so irksome; I'm glad there are some options besides ever increasing realism and embrace-the-simple-solid-shapes cartooniness.
