I rented Hulk for GameCube over the past few days, and I think it is indeed a worthy game.
First of all, the game thankfully has some challenge to it, and not filled with cheap hits either.
Hulk is comprised of two types of gameplay. The first is Hulk beatem-up style. Think how fun Streets of Rage 2 was in 2D; Hulk is just as fun IMO in 3D. The soldiers are the "ant-swarming" enemy. Yes, Hulk SMASH puny humans in a hit or two, but grow smarter with rockets and electric forcefield shields where Hulk needs to throw debris instead of a head-on fist attack. The single coolest thing I've seen so far is the ability to grab a soldier (as he cries out for help), jump and whip him into another one! Or, throw him off a rooftop! Since the soldiers will keep coming, you can practice each room in the early levels as much as you want until you're ready to move on. To move on, you basically go up to one of the walls (one with a door on it) and smash it down. The feeling of a indestructable Hulk plowing through a building is spot-on. Bosses include Hulk men and beasts (and the Leader) who were created from a smidgin of Hulk's stolen gamma energy.
The second type of gameplay is equal parts Metal Gear Solid stealth and Flashback types of puzzles. Stay out of the spotlights; sneak quietly past Hulk Dogs; access computer terminals and beat their codes; find & combine chemicles, etc. I feel the Banner stealth parts are well done and just as challenging as the hardest Hulk stages. I had to replay a few Banner missions over & over until I found the best way to get through it. If you are spotted as Banner, you basically get shot or beat up and that turns you into the Hulk, which ends the mission which absoultely needed a low-key stealth approach.
Well, I just beat the game last night. Hulk isn't really that long of a game. Now that I'm good at it, I bet I could sit down and beat it start-to-end in one sitting. Maybe. I really enjoyed this game and I plan on buying it later on after it has dropped in price. Hulk is a really fun beat'em up!
Some of the neat things in the final battles included a "Hulk vs 2 bosses" battle and another where you battle a Hulk-empowered evil scientist who is a more cunning fighter and you have to be more clever to defeat him. When Hulk jumps in the air, if you hold Y Hulk with power-up mid-air then slam into the ground. This act causes debris to fall from the ceiling which Hulk can pick up and use against enemies -- very cool! If you are running past pipes in the wall, punch the wall and pipes roll out for you to use.
The final battle is against the Leader. I beat him after using only one continue on the stage. Hulk's leap w/charge & attack move, if timed correctly, really takes the steam out of enemies, as does throwing debris at them.
There are several survival/endurance modes, time attacks, and Hulk Smash mode where you destroy stuff to earn more time against a countdown clock. Pretty mindless fun, and it is indeed "fun". If only there were a 2-player mode in this game, this would be a perfect beat'em up!
Once I got the hang of things, I found the Bruce Banner stealth missions to be the most challenging. ONe of the final Banner missions was so difficult to me -- wimpy Banner has to sneak past 2 Hulk-empowered soldiers (w/guns!) and trick them into shooting open the door at the end of the tunnel. One shot and you die. I must have tried that stage 20 or 30 times before I correctly did it. My biggest problem was tap-tapping left/right with the analog stick.
Overall, I really liked the Hulk game. I won't pay $50 for it (I rented it) but, like the Spider-Man game last year, at under $30 it is MINE.
"Excelsior!" [/StanLee]
