I've been wanting one of these since they came out, and I finally found one today for $25. Has all the hookups and one controller. Maybe a bit much for just that, but that's the cheapest I've seen them around here. I'll go grab some games next week.

Just so this isn't a meaningless post, can anyone recommend some exceptional games for the system?

There's probably a great game for every genre you're intersted in. My favorites are Soul Calibur, NFL2K2, Tennis 2K2, NBA2k2, Toy Commander, and Rayman 2. But there's a lot of good fighting and shooter games if you're more into those.

on the RPG side...I like

Grandia 2
Skies of Arcadia

and I even like E.G.G. (Elemental Gimmick Gear)

Also the DC can play a mean game of Gauntlet Legends...

I'll take all of those into consideration, I'd like to build a good collection for this. I already know I've got to buy Crazy Taxi, I used to go to the DC display at the store just to play it.

Anyone know how Virtua Fighter is for it?

Where'd you buy it at? I just bought mine for the same price at a place called "it's all about games". I've also seen them for around that price at a place called "record exchange". Both stores are near each other, so I usually go to both at the same trip.

I was just wondering where you got it, since we both live in the same state/area.

I bought it at a place called CD/Game Exchange. I did see one at Record Exchange, however, for $35.

The more I read about it, the more I'm glad I have it. House of the Dead II? Must have!

Check out this top 20 list, I wouldn't disagree with any of those games being real quality. For Crazy Taxi, you might as well get CT2 which is pretty much the same game with some minor improvements, but it does rock.

It's disappointing. I wouldn't waste money on it, since there are much better 3D fighters around like Soul Calibur.

Some of my favorites (minus what's already been mentioned):

Street Fighter Alpha 3
Tony Hawk 2
Wild Metal
Virtua Tennis
San Francisco Rush 2049
Jet Grind Radio
Capcom Vs. SNK
Bomberman Online
Record of Lodoss War
Rez (Import)

I might still pick it up, though, if it's cheap enough.

My personal favorites are Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. And of course Crazy Taxi 1 and 2.

I did get an Atari classic Arcade game that's awesome. Don't remember the name. But then,I'm more of an old school fan myself.

Okay, more questions. I know this thing's 128 bit like the modern consoles, how do the graphics stack up? I mean, I know PS2 has 128 bit graphics as well, and the graphics are a slight step down from GC and Xbox. How's the DC rate?

I think they stack up real well. Soul Calibur is still one of the prettiest fighters on any console IMO. Sonic, Crazy Taxi, Ikaruga are sweet looking games in their own right. I think games could still be made for it today that graphically could compete with the PS2. The only thing that could hurt it against the current three would be the controller. A lack of a second analog stick would be a problem. I'm not knocking the controller in fact I love the design (which is why I like the XB controller they are just DC knockoffs with a second stick) , but alot of 3D games use 2 sticks now. Unreal would rule on the DC if you didn't have to use buttons to look up and down.

i still say overall its a better system than the ps2. The hardware specs arent incredibly different.
I think it couldve also hung in there to compete the newer 2 GC and Xbox.

theres also quite a few thread on here with lists of peoples top/favorite and must have games - im on a shitty dial up connection or else id go find em for you ;)

If you can find any Fishing games (with the controller) cheap, they are supprisingly good.
I bought a 2nd hand Sega bass fishing boxset simply because it was AU$25, despite the fact I hate fishing (no I "realy" hate it).
And it's a really fun game (no "really" ;) )

But my top pick has to be Shenmue 2 (haven't played 1 yet).
I have the Jap version, and even though I cant (couldn't) understand a word being said
I'll still say it's one of the best for the system :D

I don't think the DC is as powerful as the PS2... but it's a small margin. I also think the DC is actually quite a bit easier to program than the PS2 as well, so the lines are blurred even further. For the most part, I don't see a huge difference between PS2 and DC graphics. Although the XBox and Gamecube are noticably more powerful.

In any case though, the games are good, look great, are tons of fun, and are dirt cheap. I've been able to find games for $5 at some of the local places... how can I pass up that? Hell, I've bought 2600 games for more than that!

Welcome to the Dreamcast. All I can say is, it's about time! :) If what you got works, $25 isn't a bad price at all.

My favorite games:

Dead or Alive 2
Virtua Tennis
Sega Bass Fishing
Seaman
Soul Calibur
Looney Tunes Space Race
Shenmue I AND II - import Euro version, it's worth it.
Tokyo Extreme Racer 2
Jet Grind Radio
Crazy Taxi 1 and/or 2
House of the Dead 2
Hydro Thunder
Daytona USA

And find a way to get your hands on ... HALF LIFE! It was finished, but not released, but is on the net. A fellow gamer was kind enough to mail it to be on CDR, and it's great. I was able to finish HL for the first time, never did on PC, and got to play and finish Blue Shift, too. I just prefer the feel of playing video games on my TV in my living room vs on the PC.

Tee Off Golf.

I know what you're thinking, golf games suck. Thats what I though too, but Tee Off Golf is incrediably intuiative to play, and kinda cute too.

The games that get the most play these days are multiplayer: Quake III (despite its DESPERATE lack of a "quick start" option) and Worms (the World Party version, not Armegeddon, since with Armageddon for some odd reason you have to pass around a single controller)

Powerstone and Powerstone 2 are also terrific 2- and 4-player brawlers, respectively. Very goofy and flashy and fun.

SF Rush 2049er, racing and car battles.
Chu Chu Rocket, 4 player maddness

And my single one-player pick, that unfortunately would probably cost more than you paid for the system to get, is Bangai-O. Amazing 2D oldschool fun, fills the screens with hundreds of bad guys, missiles, and explosions all at once;

The Dreamcast is really a superb piece of hardware!

I'm humming at around 145-150 titles (all real, no copies) right now.

SF Rush is great in stunt mode! 2 player mode or more is nice!
Virtual Tennis is great! Don't like tennis? You'll like this game, the controls --are dead on!
Dead or Alive... nice graphics, quick game to beat though
Atari 800 emu - wow.... with the keyboard, what can I do? :) Its great!
NES emu - the most stable NES system EVER! ;)
All the homebrew games - lots of people still messing with the DC, so it's cool stuff still brewing up all the time!
Half-Life - it is a slow load, but if you can get over that , then the game itself is what matters.
Demolition Racer - Very cool and nice music!
Worms Armageddon - You gotta love those worms! Great 2 player mode!
Rez - beautiful graphics!
Shenmue - what else do I need to say? It's Shenmue! :)

I'm sure there are dozens of others that you'd like, but it really comes down to you and what kind of games you enjoy! Best of luck finding all the games you want! Not only are most the games a blast to play but it's also a fun system to collect for!

:)

Just a reminder, I think Worms Worl Party has the edge just by virtue of letting each player have their own controller (also allows people to share controllers, if need be)

Not as good as the PC version however, esp. because it left out some of the cool napalm barrels and the like.
