I know this has been brought up many times. I remeber standing in a store looking at the saturn and screaming over the price tag. Just to find out it wouldn't even place sega cd or genesis carts. Once again we already know this. So if sega pushed the saturn back a few years and concentrated on the 32x cd games. Then release a 64 bit Saturn. I beleive they would have done better. They could even come out with a cheap all in one console sortof like the cdx with 32x built in. Then push the 65 bit system with a nice 32x add on to make it backward compatible.

I still think Sega should make a game system for 100.00 to replace older saturn/segacd/master systems. It wouldn't be to hard and the parts would be cheap.

Later,

Josh

I think it would have been smarter to skip the sega cd and 32x, and just focus on the saturn. Instead of focusing on 32x and sega cd and hold off on the saturn. But, there's no way to change the past.

hypothetical questions like this really dont make me think much. Sega fixed virtually every mistake they made with the saturn on the Dreamcast, and it failed too.

the saturn wasnt a mistake. its all about the shops!

fir isntance. in a catalog i see big written that the ps2 can play dvd. and they dont say that about the xbox. while the xbox can play better dvds. funny. since the ps2 costs more than the xbox or gamecube.

the saturn was a good system - the 32x was a piece of shit - THAT was worthless - its a good thing they dumped that neptune idea

I believe if sega had never done the 32x, and had supported the CD better in the US, the saturn would have been better recieved (as it had in japan). The saturn coulda used good support in the states too, since alot of good japanese games got left in Japan (similar story to the tg-16, admittingly).

Well, personaly, I don't think the Saturn was all that great.

It's specs were a little worse then the Playstation, but was $100 more expencive ($399).

The whole Saturn fiasco also hurt the Dreamcast. While the Dreamcast was much better, and cheap ($199), it suffered from the Saturn's "Overpriced, yet inferiour" legacy. The PS2 comming out didn't help either.

Without the 32X around, Sega still would have lost to Sony (although their reputation might have taken less of a hit), and without the Saturn, the 32X would still have died a quick death. It just wasn't powerful enough to be worth the money.

I think the only way Sega could have come out on top in that whole situation would have been if the Genesis/32X/SegaCD combo was able to play Saturn games and vice-versa. That way people could go the upgrade route and save some money.

I remeber walking into store one day and looking at saturn close out. I was really looking to snag a cdx on close out. When I got the cash ready. All they had left was the saturn. So I asked if the system was backward compatible. Since they had tons and tons of sega genesis games left. They said no and I didn't think it was worth the $99.00 for close out price. The cdx was going for $89.00. I'm not exactly sure of the close out price. I just remeber they was in a few dollars of each other.

So if sega didn't have the 32x add-on (I didn't even remeber it exhisted until I ran into a used on years later) and the sega cd (Thought it was cooler than freak when I saw it at a friends house. I wanted both the genesis and cd. Freak Nintendo.) that is fine. But then why the freak did they not make the saturn genesis compatible or at least some add-on? As for the price of the system. I could picture Sega coughing out the same or slighlty lower price to compete with the Playstation.

Josh

I'd like to add to that list, in no particular order:
Dragon Force (how could you forget THAT one?)
Albert Odessey
Fighting Vipers
Last Bronx
Fighters Megamix
Sega Ages
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Burning Rangers
And a little game nobody played called "Radiant Silvergun"

Out of those, NiGHTS, Dragon Force, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Fighters Megamix and Radiant Silvergun are on my all-time favorite list. Then again, I love Sega.

And I love them much more as a developer than a hardware company. Yes, I have all of their systems except for the Game Gear and Master System, but they posted a profit last quarter because they don't have to worry about sagging console sales. They're the reason why we have all three consoles. They're the reason why we have two GameCubes (PSO for me and bigferret). As long as they keep making money, fools like me will keep praying for a sequel to NiGHTS. Until then, I'll keep playing the NiGHTS level in Sonic Pinball Party, or firing up the Saturn for the original version.

All general statements are false ;)

Consumer loyaltys a bitch. Sega fucked up one time too many and their
rather small slice of the market abandoned them. A superior product doesn't
garantee you success (just look at the Jag)
Still I'm glad it happened. Sega makes some of the best games and now
their avalable on Nintendo systems :D

How exactly did this turn into the "best games for Saturn" thread?

I dont think anyone is denying that it had some good games. EVERY console has it's share of them.

Good games, and zealot fanaitism (is that a word?) aside... For what it was, what it cost, and what it was competing against, was it a smart business decision to bother with it?

in my opinion. the sega saturn is better then the nintendo 64. just name as much great games as the sega saturn has. you wont even come close :) .

Good point. Actually I think the Saturn as a platform was a good (if hastily put together) platform. It obviously had some cool games even if you had to import some of them, but the problem was with the botched way Sega handled the launch and subsequent management of the system.

The initial price tag is what killed the Saturn. Once Sony undercut the Saturn by $100 a pop, the big black box never had a chance. If Sega did not have the 32X and if the Saturn was launched with the same price as the Playstation, I think it would have stood a far better chance for success.

But hindsight is 20/20 and if nothing else, we're left with some pretty cool games nonetheless! :)

There was nothing wrong with the Saturn. Well.. it was underpowered in many ways, massively overcomplicated inside and a right bastard to program - but so was the PS2. Saturns only problem was that Sony turned up, made it easier and cheaper for third parties to produce games and supplied a good amount of Dev kits to those who wanted a go.
Saturn was a new console with old mentality behind it. In hindsight, Sega (and to a lesser extent Nintendo) are damn lucky they survived at all.

Still, great console though- Nights, Panzer Saga and Burning Rangers top my list:)
