I can't imagine the GBC version being better, visually, musically, or playably.  If you have to get one, go GBA all the way because it's going to be as close to SNES as you'll get.
Yeah, those scores are probably all relative, and the bar is higher in many ways for the GBA than it was for the GBC.

Really enjoyed your review and comments, MMF. Thanks much for posting them.

But I do have to admit I'm shocked: Megaman Network Transmission has been out, what.... a week now, and not a word or review from you yet???? :?

C'mon man..... don't keep me waiting... whats your verdict on the game??

I'm considering what I want to say, and I need to spend a little more time playing it before I can concretely express an opinion. In other words, the difficulty level is a bit on the high side, and I'm not sure I've yet experienced everything the game has to offer to formulate a fair review. When I do I'll post it on VG first and then here within 24 hours.

Fair enough, my friend.

I just figured that you would be screaming from the rooftops about the new Megaman game considering your devotion to the series.

Maybe you're alot like me.... too many games to play and not enough hours in the day. Like a kid at Christmas.. which present do I play with first... decisions, decisions.... :D

I just got it for the GBA, I astrongly agree with your positive review.

I think Donky Kong Country, the original on the SNES, is one of the historical highlights in the entire history of video games.

Besides being the number one selling game of all time until the mid to late 90s (9-10M sold). It pushed graphics forward years. It looked better than most games did for 5 -6 years ater it was released. That is unheard of in the industry .

The stamper brothers from England (creators of the game) pushed the envelope when they made this game. Not only was it an immense step forard graphically (load up and to this day it looks great, one classic game that my 5 year old drools over)it was a great game period. The pacing was great, so many things to do, the character animations themselves were wonderful. The musical score unforgettable.

it was as close to a perfect video game as you can get.

Actually, the second DKC was the best. It had the best music and storyline. The third was a reach but had nice graphics and a better mapping system. The first was just a breakthrough game. I love the second though. Even though the first is easier to beat. As is the third. The second is the hardest of all three.

The music in all three rocks though and I would love to grab the soundtracks some time.

See, now this is something that has always bugged me about games released at the time... DKC's only real graphic prowess is that it has great animation. All the real power was done on SGI workstations when the pre-rendering was done. It may still look nice, but it always seemed like cheating to me. The same goes for Killer Instinct.

If it weren't for lack of colors, the Genesis could easily have done DKC just as well... Plus, maybe the "Blast Processing" could have made it better in a few areas! ;)

LOL. "Blast Processing". At least Nintendo tried to push their games past the processors limits with the Super FX chips. Sega just kept releasing new add ons to do the same stuff.

Yeah, but two things: you're underplaying the importance of the look (I don't think my aunt would have been as interested if it looked like, say, Mario) and two, it had some really nice graphic design with the characters and especially the backgrounds (in particular the underwater levels). They didn't just use a "cheaty" form of graphics; they used it well

If you think Donkey Kong Country "shook the creativity tree", you must have been hit by one of those coconuts. DKC has got to be one of the most formulaic platformers ever made... it was best described by one game magazine as a "prettier clone of Hudson's Adventure Island".

Every part of the Donkey Kong Country trilogy was a breakthrough.

From the graphics, to the level design to the music and sound effects.

Sure, the graphics were pre-rendered, but they were pre-rendered well.

And the music was some of the best.

My favorite is DKC 2. It had the best story, music and graphics. 1 was a leap into the unknown, 3 was a nice ending with some really cool new ways to do stuff, (Like the new overworld map and the ways to travel through it.) but 2 was well rounded.

All three are classics, and are best played on the original medium. The SNES.

By the way, do these new DKC GBA remakes have new extra stuff like the SMB remakes before them?

I guess Mario Tennis or Virtua Tennis is just a "prettier clone of Pong", huh?

That quote's just stupid. This game had a good amount of depth, both visually and gameplay wise. Some collecting gameplay, multiple ways of attacking enemies, some exploration elements (finding all the balloons and bananas and K O N G), beautiful worlds, cart levels, some clever enemy design, your animal allies to ride, decent bosses, and a fun co-operative 2-player mode, different attributes for DK vs Diddy...

Sure, you kind find many of those elements in other platformers, but very few did it so well in such a nice package...and the use of pre-rendered but dynamic graphics was innovative, and let the old SNES look better than most PSX and N64 games.

Comparing DKC to Adventure Island is plain stupid. They have NOTHING in common! Aside from being a side scroller as well.. Oh no! It IS a rip off! Wait! Adventure Island is ripping off SMB! Oh NO!!
