I've never owned a PlayStation. I've never had much interest in the PlayStation. I'm not sure how much I like the controller... too many buttons, especially all those shoulder buttons, and those goofy shape symbols they use.

But... the PSOne is so cute. And it's only $50. It may be gone soon. And there are probably some games for it I may like, although finding a few gems I'll enjoy from the duds could be a lot of work.

Then again... I've got six consoles already to keep me occupied, from my Atari 2600 through my Sega Dreamcast. I don't really need another game system. But...

Waddya think, guys?

Then again.... I've never owned a GameBoy, either, and there's the SP...

Like most of the gaming world, I was once a Playstation owner and can say their are some very good games and a lot of rubbish as well.

I however wonder why you would buy one? You have a superior Dreamcast already so it won't improve on what you got. I wouldn't recommend collecting for it as a complete collection would probably require a house extension and it would be very difficault as there is simply a huge number of titles. But it would keep you busy.

You'd be better going for the PS2 as you can still play PS1 games but you get a better console in the bargain.

As for the controller for PS1, the genuine Sony item is of good quality but the analogue sticks are not well placed (non ergonomic). The older original pads are ok and you get used to all the buttons although less so the shoulder ones.

I already have a PS2 and I just got the PSONE LCD combo. I really like it. I debated for months on whether I should get it or not and finally my wife got it for me as a Father's day gift. If you have the cash, why not? If you want more overall value then get a PS2.

(Brian, I see you are from Pittsburgh. I'm from Greensburg. How about that?) :)

If you want to play Playstation games, then I'd say go for it. For one thing, there are a few Playstation games that won't play on a PS2 (Tomba! and Arcade Party Pak come to mind, but I think that there are about ten). Also, I haven't heard any complaints about the PSone breaking down, unlike with the original Playstation and the PS2. Finally, if you are going to do any signficant amount of playing, I'd say it's better to wear out a $50 PSone than a $200 PS2.

Plus, it's small and cute.

Sure, pick it up. There are some good games, though I suggest reading up on any interesting titles before purchasing (if possible). Beware, there's a lot of crap titles, too. May I suggest that if you do buy one, get Duke Nukem: Time To Kill. Lots of fun, that one is. Also try Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Some people complain about it, I personally love it.

At the very least, it's another system to say you have. I actually need to pick up a PS1, I have the older PSX (from 1999), though it still plays good.

I've had a PSX for 3 years and only played one game over and over, Gran Turismo 2. But it was the best video game I had in the house :)

I've finally have taken the time to look for other games this year and it's a fun system to collect for because of its huge library. All the Dance Dance Revolution games can't be beat either :D

It's not that I have the money to burn... if I did I could burn it on some DVDs... but I keep seeing that PSOne when I stop in TRU, and I remember seeing some interesting games on it, usually when it's hooked up to the LCD screen... I think one of the Tekken games was one of them.

I wouldn't get a PS2 anymore than a XB or GC. I could never get myself to spend $100+ on a game system, plus $50 or so for each game.

I should probably break down and buy my first GameBoy, cuz the SP really interests me, I like the design, the size, and the fact it has a light, finally! But the price of it and the price of games stops me.

To Heavy-Sixer... I'm just outside of da 'burgh, in Sewickley.

I can think of 2 reasons to buy 1, FF7 and FF9. It's worth the $50 and you can always use a boot disc if you cant find the games u r after.

IMO It's worth the money. Their are some gems their (Roll Away, Tomba!, Ape Escape, etc) while you have to currantly have to sort through the Shit they are releasing now (Barbie/Mary Kate & Ashley, Barney, etc) to find the good stuff.

yeah, definately worth buying. Given that most PS2 games are uninspired sequels to great PS1 titles, you might as well save some money and buy the originals.
Oh, and those controllers - you rarely need to use all the buttons, 'X' is generally the fire button because it's where your thumb naturally rests.

No, don't buy it.

I was in your shoes like a year or two ago. Mostly I really wanted to play "Unholy War", an unoffical sequel to Archon, by the same people (who also did Star Control...) And I figured there'd be a bounty of other fun cheap games. Except for some Arcade Paks (most of which you can get the equivalent of elsewhere) there has been VERY little to bring me back to this system (not liking Final Fantasy's and their endless random boring battles.) Just vast loads of shovelware, and versions of game styles done better on my beloved N64.

What I'd do is wait a while more 'til you can get a PS2, and then you could play any PSX game that catches your eye. As well as GTA3 or GTA:VC, which for me have been the only really strong reasons to justify keeping the system.

I bought an original Playstation a few weeks ago at a yard sale (because it was cheap, not that I had any real interest in it). Then I bought a few games for it (a couple of Rampage games, the first Tenchu, etc.). I'm pretty happy with it, but I don't see myself investing much if any more money in it.

For my money the GBA SP can't be beat. Lots of good games amidst the the crappy Olsen Twins games and stuff like that, and with the screen light I no longer feel as if I'm going blind.

I can think of about 10 good reasons:

* Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
* Chrono Cross
* Crash Bandicoot
* Final Fantasy VII
* Final Fantasy VIII
* Final Fantasy IX
* The Italian Job
* Konami Arcade Classics
* Mega Man X4
* Metal Gear Solid

Actually I can think of more than ten, I just stopped at M. ;)

Of course you should buy one! There are tons of great games out there to find.

The graphics might be on the dated side, but if you're on AtariAge, chances are you don't care too much about graphics.

A few reccomendations:

Crash Bandicoot
Die Hard Trilogy

If you're into the homebrew scene you could get a development system (PSOne, LCD screen, and mod chip ) for ~ $134.

I've been debating this too. I have a PSX already but having the PSOne with the LCD would be neat to have close to the PC for development. BTW, I've never done any PSX development but with all the information floating around, it's tempting.

I've also thought about waiting. If they're $50 now they will eventually drop lower (when Sony stops supporting them). I remember getting a Jaguar cheap the same way. I probably paid $30 for a NIB one at KB some years back.

if youre looking for sub - 100 dollar systems, GameCrazy (the game outlet store for Hollywood Video) sells refurbished gamecubes for 80 dollars now. Plus they give you a bunch of free rentals with the system. That is a much better deal than a PSone :)

That is SO not neccesarily true. I think some people come to the game with an open mind, but don't get veyr far into it before growing really tired of all the boring monster fights.

Did you read what I wrote? I picked up the real game, on a PSX, and gave it the old college try, but the boring battles got to me before I got a chance to be really involved with the story line etc, so I never got very far into it at all. Compared to what I had seen in terms of Zelda on the N64, the fighting was dull as dishwater, and stressful as I got too worried about doing the "wrong" thing. I like the semi-scifi theme better than Zelda's traditional fantasy theme though.

FF7 ranks as one of the best titles of all time. If you find the fight scenes boring then speed them up, its all old school constitution building and with the best story ever (imho) written for an RPG who cares about the boring bits? I got so involved in this game the 1st time around i was having dreams about it, friends of mine where as well. I have recently played it again and was just as addicted the second time around. Magazines to this day compare RPGs to FF7, surely this says something?

Brian R., my advise is buy one and lock yourself away for a month.
