im in need of some advice. My friend is selling his playstation (not the PSONE) but it has a problem. The video is temperamental. Sometimes it'll come up...other times it wont.

Is there any easy fix for this problem or is it an issue with the main board? Which in that case I'll stay away from it. Any advice is appreciated and has anybody else ran into this problem and was able to fix it?

With a new PSone only costing $50, your friend better be offering you one helluva deal. The new one should have at least a 30 day return on it too.

I think he might be offering me a heck of a deal, but i really need to know if there is a fix for the video problem otherwise the money wouldn't be well spent. :)

Any ideas? By the way its an original playstation, not the small white one.

This is one of the reasons I don't play my PSX very much, I want to keep mine nice. It works fine now and I want to keep it that way. My cousin's have a system that has the problem you stated. I can usually get it to work by wiggling the cords around, but you have to have something that will hold them in the right position to keep it working, and sometimes it will come in with no sound. I know this doesn't mean much to you now, just sharing.

If they have an old 1001 console with RCA's out they have a cold or cracked solder joint on the composite video (yellow) out. They also may have a cold solder joint at the AC input base on the power supply board.

If it's multi-AV out only, try bending down the metal tab that grounds the shield (inside the connector on top) as that's probably loose. The muti-AV's dont generally suffer from soldering issues.

I've repaired the Sega Genesis in the past and when those have no power its because the three solder joints on the motherboard are cracked so its a matter of resoldering them and BOOM good to go.

Could be the same thing with the video on the playstation but I won't have to worry about that now. I do appreciate everybody's input. I live to learn and then learn to live. :)

I remember a while back mine has tempramental video, then I found out it was the VCR it was plugged into cause its AV out was flakey. Now I've plugged It directly into the TV and it works great!

Thats very interesting. I never knew VCRS could play a role in that. I'll find out more once the Playstation arrives. I think the theory with the cold solder joints might sound more like it cause if you wiggle a wire and the video goes on and off thats usually because of cracks in the solder joints on the motherboard.

Who knows but it'll be interesting come next week when it arrives. I'll let everybody know what i find. It'll be fun!!
