Finally, another PS1 game I really, really like! That's makes the count rise to 3 games! Woo hoo!

Yes, I had never played the original before a few days ago. Had played 2 or 3 (can't remember), they were alright, but hard. Well, my cousin had the first one the other day, I got into it so much that when I got home I went and had a brand new copy placed on hold for me at the store. I'm not missing my $10.

The graphics are obviously dated (1996 here), but the game is so addicting, they're worth overlooking. And frankly, when has it ever been all about the graphics?

great, isn't it? It's bizarre, in all the sequels, they forgot that what you really wanted to be doing is RAIDING TOMBS:)
Wonderful sense of scale in some of those chambers as well - have you met the T Rex yet?

Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness has an archeological dig (Tomb of Ancients) and the bats are back along with skeleton warriors. I've enjoyed playing thus far...

I must say that I'd rather be raiding tombs, too (vs. wandering the streets of Paris) - but even Indiana Jones left the jungle/tomb in his last outing (Emperor's Tomb).

Well, keep at it. That particular scene is guaranteed to scare the crap out of you - even when you know it's coming:)
Truly a landmark gaming moment :D
Oh yeah - the Saturn version was the original wasn't it? How does it stack up against the PS1 version. Look the same?

Saturn version is about like playing the PC version without a video card (to help with texture smoothing). Seems like when it first came out, you needed a 3DFX card to take advantage of the "improved" graphics. Saturn is very pixelated, whereas the PS1 version seems to have corrected this.

If you've ever played Quake on the Saturn, you'll understand what I'm saying.

Not than Saturn can't do a good 3D/pseudo 3D game...
Dead or Alive is better (in my opinion) than PS1 version. Deep Fear is another good "survival horror" game. Both make decent use of polygons.

I played it when it came out on the Saturn. I would say it qualifies as one of my top 3 gaming experiences of all time.

I loved the first Tomb Raider and really enjoyed the second one. After that, I lost interest because nothing was new enough to keep me wanting to play. The 1st one was without a doubt, a great gaming experience

The PS version is better, but only by a fraction. The saturn version is fully playable but it seemed harder to me. Either version is worth owning, or maybe even both

I can't get the lovely Lara across the fire pillars in a room on one level without getting herself burned or falling into the rat-infested water. ARRGH!

I also wanna play Tomb Raider again but this time on the PS2 with that mode to improve psx game graphics. There's also a
controller mod I have in mind to play all the
older psx games with the analog knob (not just the digital buttons).

Definitely. I'm not even that far and I can tell it. This must've provided some serious competition for Super Mario 64 back in '96.

@VicGeorge: run faster, my friend. I remember that stage ... (shudder).

Tomb Raider (I played it on the Saturn originally) was one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Right up there with the first time I experienced Sonic the Hedgehog and Flashback. It took me at least 2 months to beat the game and I loved every moment (except those moments where I died ... again).

Core's team really dialed in on what an exciting adventure game is. I love the choice of locales, the plot, the character, and the enemies you'd encounter. Wild bears & wolves, saggitaurians, lions, alligators, bats, apes, mummy dog things ... you name it, it was there.

I haven't played TR or TR2 for years and I'm tempted every so often to pick them up again to play on my PSX. But I'm afraid their early 3D graphics might ruin my memories. I would simply LOVE a PS2-enhanced version of the original TR and TR2 together! You'd think somebody could at least port the accelerated PC versions , but maybe they'd still look too clunky for a 'new' title.

TR3 is the last 'semi-good' Tomb Raider. There are some aweome parts in it, lots of raptors, Indian statues which spring to life, I even liked the piranha levels. TR: The Last Revelation is a mediocre stab at bringing new life to the old engine. Don't even get me started on the rehash urban foulness of Chronicles.

Surely you mean a GOOD video card. I can't imagine the Saturn version being a black screen with just noise. :)

I liked Tomb Raider on PS1 but there were parts where it was really hard and had I not been determined to finish the game, I would have probably quit playing it. Only having save points at certain parts of the game made it harder than it needed to be.

The sequels eliminated that by allowing you to save anywhere.

You know I have yet to play the first one.

I have played all the others except the PS2 one that was just released.
I loved the part 2. One of the best PS1 games ever I think. The sense of exploration was awesome. I played it everyday until I beat it. Part 3 I didnt like at all. The game was hard as hell and you had to sparingly save or you would use up all your crystals. Almost all the others havn't been up to par with part 2. It seemed that you'd just move from one do or die situation to the next. Gah frustration!!!!

I think I will have to try part 1. I'd imagine you can find it pretty cheap these days.

I only played the first. And only back when it was a Beta demo game on the PC and not actually OUT yet.

My friend pointed it out. He said "Try this game. It's called Tomb Raider. It has a woman as the main character. I'm not too sure about that. But it's a cool game."

So I did. I read the readme and saw how it was going to be available for a game system called the PSX. "What's a PSX?" I thought, then forgot about it.

I got a code to get unlimited crystals in game 3. That made the game more enjoyable. Limited crystals was a dumb idea.

And you can get Tomb Raider 1 pretty cheap nowadays.

Yeah, with the PS1 pretty much dead now, games can be had fairly cheap. My Tomb Raider was $10 brand new.

Ah Tomb Raider. I first played this game on the Saturn and I must say this is absolutely the best game I've ever played. The sequels I thought were a waste of time, the new game is not bad; but u can never beat the original. Great level design, excellent textures, thoughtful monsters, fabulous music and a sexy lady! Can't be surpassed EVER!

Hmm, I saw a Saturn copy of TR1 for £1.99 today (that's about $3) - might pick it up. I could get the PS1 version again and have better graphics but there's something altogether more fun about playing games on the Saturn:)
