funny how quickly this became a 'console X is better than console Y'/'X-Box is better than a pc' topic. But, there are many reasons why i prefer PCs for FPS' and RTS'.
It all comes down to personal preference, really. FPS is fun, but I prefer not to play RTS, period.

Keyboard is just better for playing them, you can get mods and patchs if there are any bugs or new maps released. and more reasons.
I prefer a double-analog console pad for FPS, which dovetails neatly with my preference to lean back on a couch. I also prefer to play a (usually) bug-free console game, rather than downloading a series of patches.

And actually, on a side note, Valve says that with scalling for older systems, Half Life 2 will prolly be able to run on a 600 mhz machine with a decent graphics board. And nowadays, you can get a 1.2 ghz, with a geforce 3 and 512 RAM for around $700.
I prefer not to spend $700, since I already put $200 down on an Xbox.

And you can use it for many more things than a console.
I also rarely prefer to do anything on my computer that my P3 400 can't do.

And don`t think i`m bashing the X-Box, even though i do hate it and M$, but i just really am not that impressed with any console as it is, and i think the PC invents new stuff more so than a console. Consoles may invent a genre, but the PC perfects it, in my opinion.
I would be interested to read about examples of this "perfecting" thing, other than RTS (which I believe that Herzog Zwei for Genny launched, and which has been developed quite well on the PC).

I only like consoles for RPGs, Platformers and racing/sports games, FPS' are ok on them too, just i can manage better on a PC. And last reason why i like PC online play more than X-Box, is cause you don`t have to pay anything more than your broadband fee, unless you play a subscription game
You raise a good point with the fact that Xbox Live is a pay service, but if you can say that a new computer costs only $700, I'm sure I can say that Live costs only $50/year.
Of course, I love my PC, the true home of Doom and LucasArts's XWing series of games. PC space shooter sims blow similar console games out of the water, partly because of the intended audience, and partly because it's hard to get 30 functions onto a console controller. So I will always have an obsolete PC hanging around the house to enjoy the previous generation of space shooter sims (a dying breed, it seems).
But I'm too cheap to upgrade a PC with any regularity, and too lazy to deal with compatibility issues and patches. And I think there's something charming about dedicated game consoles.
Anyway, since the PC vs. console thing all personal preference, nobody's going to be convined by anybody's arguments, so let us continue our personal chauvenisms regarding our game rigs of choice.
As far as exclusive games go, all your friend really needs to know is that an Xbox and Steel Battalion is only $400 (if he can find SB at retail price--good luck with that one). The biggest console with the biggest controller = the biggest fun!
