Some freaks have found a way to run Linux on the X-box using just a drop of solder and are threatening to release the trick to the world if Microsoft doesn't allown Linux to be enabled. This is fun.

I know I don't. But if it makes Microsoft Mad and Linux users happy, I'm all for it.

Well...everything and it's 3 toed sister has been ported to linux...there are millions of computer geeks world round that are working non stop to make new linux stuff for the masses...the big thing being the ability to pirate games without a mod chip in the release they are talking about doing if MS doesn't give up a boot code...MS can not be very happy right now.

Basically every emu that exists now for linux and all that jazz would be on the xbox right off the shelf - for what is it now $159 or $179?

My guess is they will squash this pretty fast.

pirating games kills systems, and for that fact alone, microsoft should sue the SHIT out of these guys.

$199 and you are getting more then $199 worth of hardware. P3-733, nVidia GeForce video (1920x1080 - 116.5m/sec polygons), 8gig or better HD, 64meg ram, 10/100 ethernet, 256 channel (64 3d channels) stereo dolby 5.1 audio.

But mostly because it makes for a cheap instant webserver. Buy Xbox, Install mod chip, Boot linux and run Apache. Can't get much cheaper. Even if you built your own striped down PC for a server, wouldn't end up being much cheaper if at all. And the rates for leasing commerical webspace can still get downright insane.

if you can get it to boot an OS that isnt so annoying as linux, then i would be interested. Get DOS6.0 or something, run the command line MAME port, and that would make me very happy.. but linux and unix if you ask me arnt worth the hype.

People wanted Linux on PS2 so a kit was put together including a 40GB drive and nobody bought it.

Its a shame too, because it could have been put to many good uses.. but remember, the hardcore nerds dont hate sony. they hate microsoft and want to spite them more to just piss them off than to actually run linux and be productive.

The coolness factor is a major part of this. It would just be really cool to see a Linux desktop on a X-box. By the way this is my first post from my new linux box, (well a 5 gig partition on one of my other rigs) I like the OS and I understand why you guys are all the rave about Mozilla, using it now and not a single pop up yet! ;)

Actually, I ran across an article about the ps/2 and linux kit. A research facility put together a cluster of them. The reason they picked the ps/2 was because of the official linux kit. They also explained they was not interested in the processor but more the graphics processor. Saying the graphics processor is only partialy tapped right now. So now they can run some pretty good graphic simulations on it. Once again I don't have the article/website. I do remeber it was also featured on TechTv Tech live show. Had like 300 ps/2 connected together.

Later,

Josh

Yes Jerry, but even you have to admit the "can not" list was crippling:

* You can not use it to play PS2-HD enhanced games.
* You can not use it with a regular television or monitor.
* You can not run binary code from other Linux systems.
* You can not use your existing 8 MB card w/o wiping it.

I'm sure the list of "can nots" turned off even a lot of Linux enthusiasts. Why wouldn't they just build their own set-up instead of trying to do one through a Playstation 2?

I'm sorry liquid_sky, but you are saying some pretty clueless statements here.

Why would you want to run linux on an xbox?? Are you serious? That's like asking, Why would you buy a PC?

Oh and running Linux has absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with pirating games.

Please liquid_sky, do you have some other agenda here? Or are you really this clueless? :?

Actually they say one "side effect" of not having the boot disk would be that it would allow you to play pirated games, although I agree with you that running linux on the xbox has nothing to do with it - other than the 'side effect' which, like it or not many people will use.

Ah I see, you are not really this clueless, you are just attempting to bash linux because you don't understand it or something like this.

Well, just because you don't understand how to use an OS doesn't mean that it is pointless for everyone else. I'm wondering, just what about linux annoys you?

the consoles command line usage such as -A where a is a letter of the alphabet used to excert a certian option from a command. I hated it in dos too... see, im dyslexic, and they confuse me to no end. That, and the generally low hardware compatibility rates with linux drove me nuts when i dual booted.

Running linux on your xbox doesn't mean you can pirate games. You have to have a bios capable of running unsigned code. Any modchip you buy now comes with a Linux Cromwell bios flashed on the chip. This will run linux and is perfectly legal. In order to get your Xbox to run the unsigned code your chip would need to be flashed with a hacked bios capable of booting non MS software. Just because you have Linux running on your Xbox doesn't mean you can pirate games.

anything that gives you total unchecked access to the xbox hard drive can be used as a form of piracy.. people will just copy the games to the hard drive.

Well, ofcourse hardware compatibility is not an issue with the xbox. And you can do just about everything from the GUI these days. There is even a GUI now that looks and acts just like WinXP, see XPDE.

No doubt this would kick XB sales into overdrive but still the idea of some pussies threatening someone like this is pretty pathetic. I'm sure there's quite a few people sitting around with some KY and Kleenex over this but if someone tried this shit on me with MY own product, the shit would hit the fan. And honestly, not everyone cares about Linux. But we will see how this plays out....
