admin: delete the exploit text. It wouldnt be good if ms went after sites with the text listed, and this site came up.

Does AtariAge have any disclaimers that say they are not responsible for content posted on their message boards? This looks like a clear violation of the DMCA to me! :P

It's sad that we have to worry about this stuff now. That post really should be deleted because Microsoft is just that vindictive.

You know that in the upcoming Longhorn system taht you will no longer control /root on your own machine?

We're all gonna have to go back to the old systems, aren't we.
We need Mozilla for the Atari 800 and do our browsing that way.

If M$ does a search for this there is going to be a bout a million+ hits on it. It's everywhere. I'm sure PBS has a page on it too. It's going to hurt nothing here.

Quick! To the lawyer-mobile!

I think Microsoft will have as much success stopping this as Nintendo did stopping UltraHLE.

It'll be interesting to see where this goes from here... Will people be able to exploit this trick to play copied games without a mod chip? On it's own, a handful of sweaty nerds running Linux on the X-Box would pose no threat to Microsoft, but once this lets you play copied games, then they're in trouble.

You still need to use the 007 exploit to get it to work though...

With this exploit alone, no. With this you can run Linux and that's all. You won't even be able to play any Xbox games at all if you just run Linux. But if you modify the file and some other stuff, then yes you can play copied games. This isn't something that I think a lotta people will do. Although it is fairly easy, most common consumers won't know about it or be bothered to do it. And how many have DVD burners? While you don't even need DVD copies of the games to play them, I still doubt many will crack open the Box to do a HD swap because It's not as simple as taking the case off, taking the 8, 10, or 20 gig out, throwing in a 120 gig putting it back together and you're done....While this is big news to Linux users, it will have little impact for quite some time in the overall picture. Hell, I have 3 moded XB's and truthfully, copying games is the last reason I did them. Really no interest to me. While modding an Xbox is not rocket science, it is still more involved than most people know.

I love the twist the hackers put on the whole thing though - claims that they were just trying to help MS and keep developers interested  I still see tons of PC games made and software even though copying of those things has been done on PC and before since day 1. And finally, I still believe that this is just one more part of MS plan all along ;)

With things going the way they have been, I wouldn't put anything past the corporations. If someone got a bug up their ass they could sue everyone who printed this. AtariAge just has quite a bit more to lose than most of the others.

Did you see the 19-year old who wrote a program to so file searches on his university computer and got sued because the program could be potentially used to find illegal MP3s. The judegemt was for everything he had.

The first amendment seems to have lost half its value over the last two years.

That's something I would do just to spite them.

Stick it to the man. The man who couldn't build a good OS if the Devil himself were standing over their shoulder. Uh.. his shoulder.. or whatever.

I don't have an XBOX and haven't been following the mod/Linux/emulation/Piracy "news" on the XBOX so I have to ask:

Does this expoit make the XBOX into a cheap "open" PC "for the masses" or is this still in the realm of "geekdom"?

I've been wanting to build a small PC to run emulation and web browsing in my living room.. this looks like it might be the best way to go...

Its not like the tape would have caught on fire or done any damage, it just smelled like 3m took a shit in the middle of the room :):)

No, it's still very much in the realm of geekdom. You have to do weird stuff just to get the exploit to work in the first place, and even once you do get it working, you'd really have to know linux before you you could consider this a "PC for the masses".

This hack is a little esoteric at the moment... but I think the more people there are running Linux on these things, the better chance of cracking the thing once and for all (that is, enough that you can just stick in a DVD without a mod chip, and run whatever was on the DVD).
