Well yes, and no. Supposedly the theory is that since you can now mod. your Xbox without even opening it up, then it should be easier for people to do so (and cheaper.) The exploit was just released yesterday, in time user friendly tools will surface.

However, that being said, I think anyone who owns an xbox is a geek... :P

Looking over the details of this exploit, it appears that it isn't limited to running Linux at all. You should be able to run pretty much anything you want with it.

I'm waiting to see someone get Windows up and running on it. I don't know how much would need to be done to accomplish that (should just be drivers at most.) It is already capable of running a custom version of windows CE. It's not that I have a love for windows or anything, but doing so would bring this to the masses nearly instantly.

As I said before, allowing a company this kind of control over how you use your property is dangerous. Especially if you look at what MS is doing in their future operating systems.

Those that have modded Xbox's already know there are easier ways to get Linux on your box. Some let you make files into an audio formatt and use the dash to rip the tracks onto your drive. This hack doesn't even you require to have a 007/mechassault game. The only reason this new hack got so much press is because of the whole "blackmail" issue. This hack really doesn't change anything for the average consumer. All this hack is going to do is make MS update their dash again through live so people are not able to play backup games online.

Yea but if you do this isn't it true that you can't play XBox games on it anymore?
Ok great a cheap PC, but don't most people who would know a damn thing about Linux already have a computer?

Seems pretty pointless to me...

From what I have read over the last 2 days.. if you boot the XBOX with nothing in the drive, it will boot to Linux, while if there is a game in the drive, it will boot the game. You are only replacing the Dashboard.

The uselfulness (to me anyway) of it as a "cheap PC" would be to put it in my living room armoire and use it on my television, both as an XBOX and as a PC...

I don't know a damn thing about Linux though... :D

Ah, but there is SO much more to this.....

Two words: TSOP Flashing.

Why bother with a modchip when you can flash the Xbox's own on-board flash bios with whatever valid bios image you want. Be it a modchip bios, or linux boot bios, or whatever.

With the 007AUF trick, and an Action Replay, you can effectively drop the xbox into a linux shell. Telnet in from a PC or something, run a linux based flash app, and "woot, there u go."

Depending on which revision Xbox you have, you can even do a switched multi-bios with the stock xbox flash bios chip.

It's not that hard to find all the resources on the net.

Let's just say, I know it can be done & works. :D
