Well, they are cheaper on many items that aren't crap:
Here are 2 examples:
plain white FOTL T shirts: The bay 12.99
Zellers 6.99
identical product.
Logastina 12 pc CW set The Bay 249.99
Zellers 197.49
identical product.
It's good to have competition, even between stores that have two brands (the stores, not the goods).
While the bay is much more comfortable, even prestigious to shop at, you can find many of the identical products cheaper in a "box" store. Why? Less overhead for the box store, equals cheaper prices at the counter.
If you were a parent, where would you buy diapers? The bay or Zellers?Guess which is cheaper. They both sell them.
Low overhead department stores are great for buying appliances etc. Where "The Brick" (Canada) may charge you 49.99 for a toaster, the exact same brand will generally be 10% or less at a low overhead store.
For many families, these savings can be the"make it or break it" factor in their fiscal year!
The layout or presentation of a store often does not represent quality...Unless YOU want it to! That is why many high end places exist. While they do obviously have some higher ticket/quality items, they also carry many of the same items as the low cost store, at an inflated retail line.
Which store do you think costs less to build? maintain? staff? All of these aspects determine your final price of a product at the counter.
Both types of stores are great. Low end stores create COMPETITION on final pricing. High end stores instill quality of purchase.
Again, why would you want to eliminate either type?
