Some people know that s-video is the term for signal transmission
through cables while s-vhs is a vcr recording standard, but the two
terms always get mixed up, even in industry.

Well, I am over in Milan Italy for a couple weeks on a business trip. Was
just in a supermarket a couple of hours ago and they had s-video cables
but the packaging only said s-vhs in huge letters, even though that is
the cable you'd buy to hookup an s-video cable box to an s-video tv (don't
even need an s-vhs vcr in the picture).

So I give up, it just a incorrect term that became correct because everyone
uses it, like calling a 1.5v cell a 1.5v battery.

BTW, Italy has a lot of lazy people. I'm trying to work with them on getting a critical project done
and when they're not off on vacation (which seems to take up most the summer),
they won't make customer needs a priority, and the guy I need only works half days on Friday to boot.
Read in Playboy that workers in Italy top the list with an average 42
vacation days a year, and I can believe it. Some people will say that's
the way to be, but I answer that 80% of new businesses don't even make it.
Not trying to be prejudiced, but when the other company (in Korea) and ours
get together, we really whip things out quick. Oh well....

The cable was developed to support the new Super VHS videotapes in the 1980's. Naturally it was named "S-VHS cable".

Now everyone uses DVDs for their movies. so the cable was renamed "S-Video" to prevent confusion.

Both terms are correct, but the term "S-VHS cable" is the older one. It's no different than saying "tissue" or "Kleenex".

The term S-video predates DVD.

Just to confuse the situation some more... S-video can also be correctly referred to as Y/C … :D

Nope -- S-video refers to not just the seperated signals, but to the PLUG type...

S-video is the generic term for the connector and cable type, s-vhs the brand name...
