When I start up my copy of Crazy Taxi it shows a screen I am not sure was in the copy we had at our store.

When booted, the screen stays black with white pixelly letters not even centered on screen saying:

"Loading Crazy Taxi (15K)"

Then it says:

"Crazy Taxi Loaded"

Then it flashes the yellow VMU loaded screen and shows the logo animation and just plays normally.

I don't remember this, though I never actually looked. But I don't recall my version at the toy store saying this stuff. I think mine went right to the Sega logo.

The Disc has no labelling that it is different, so I'm just curious as to why it's there and why it wouldn't be hidden by some pretty graphics or a blank screen.

It's like booting a PC with Windows. You see the DOS BIOS screen first, info you don't really need normally.

Just curious.

Okay. I was just curious because it seemed like a weird thing to do. I never saw a game (Let alone a modern one) with a boot screen like that. No fancy graphics and a flash of a non-readable screen. Just odd.

Yep mine does this also. Exept mine also has a 50 - 60 hz selection screen that
shows up every time I load it, you'd think it would save your screen settings :?

And CT is the only game my DC has problems with (stops reading the disc properly after a indeterminate period of time :x and it's not scratched at all :x )

I'm guessing that it takes more time to load flashy graphics than it does to load a black screen with text. Kinda like in GT3, how there was just that blinking white cube in the corner. Did you have a VMU at the store when you played, it wouldn't have anything to load if you didn't...thus the loading to the title.

Now that you mention it. No, at the store we had no Memory cards or Rumble packs in the controllers.
