Yes, you read that right. The original Atari Star Wars arcade game will be available on a bonus disc for the GameCube. The bonus disc will be available the same way the "Zelda" one was earlier this year.

The only thing about the old arcade game is that AWESOME controller you used.
In my opinion that made the game all the more great.
I dont think any controller can do the game justice.
If only they could emulate that controller.

About the closest you can get is using MAME and a mouse. The GameCube controller will be a dog with that game. Still, it's nice that Lucasarts haven't forgotten about what started it all...

I wonder... Who has the rights to that game? Infogrames/Atari, LucasArts, or Midway/Atari?

So I'm guessing this will be done with vectors, and not messed up with texture mapping or anything, right? I wonder how well todays 3D hardware can handle vector graphics....

Rhindle: Is your avatar supposed to animate that fast? And how did you get GB Camera pics onto your computer? Did you print them then scan them or something?

Didn't Alec Guinness forbid the use of his voice in video games?

SWEET!

Though the old arcade controller will be sorely missed.

That controller rocked so much. Are there any controllers that are half as good? I wonder if something like that would work as a regular flightstick?

Incidentally, I assume MAME does a better job now, but it took it a long time to get a halfway decent version of that game emulated....

My MAME emulates it pretty well, it's better than you'd think with the mouse.

It's supposed to be straight emulation. My subscription to IGN ran out and I'm holding off 'til the Christmas season to renew, so I can't download the video they put up. I'm sure they'll get some screenshots up soon.

My avatar is supposed to animate that fast. It's just me being wacky. (I probably won't keep it long. It's quite distracting.) The pics come straight from the GB Camera through a product called "Camera Link" that Mad Catz made some years ago. You just hook a special cable from the GB to the computer and print the images as if sending them to a Game Boy Printer and the program on the PC grabs them. They had to be resized, since their native resolution is 160x144.

I've played Star Wars on MAME about 11 rounds in.
(Yes I used a cheat)
And yes I used the mouse and it was pretty smooth.
Still doesn't even begin to hold a candle to playing SW the way it was ment to be played. Sitting down in a cockpit version both hands wrapped around that awesome controller. Sorry you just wont be able to reproduce that. Even if you emulate the game perfectly.

(re: original topic: yeah, I would guess MAME handles it well now but it took a while, and yeah, it's emulation so the video looks just like the arcade, though the cursor tends to move a little differently)

Anyway, I'm a big fan of primitive graphic technology. like GB cameras. (Unfortunately I can't find a rather artsy series a friend of mine did and put on line)

I took some old QuickCam pics and made them into tiny tiny animated GIFs, check out Small Gif Cinema: http://kisrael.com/features/sgc.html

Absolutely. Star Wars in a sit-down cabinet is still one of the greatest arcade experiences possible.

But given that Factor 5 is handling the emulation, it's going to be as close as you can get.

And it is a giveaway bonus, after all, not a product unto itself. And a very cool bonus at that.

Agreed. You can't beat a free a game no matter how you look at it.

Wow, that's pretty cool... I wouldn't mind picking up one of those myself. Are they rare? I had no idea such a product existed. I lucked out and bought a GB Camera from Zellers for $16 when they were blowing them out... I never managed to find a cheap printer though :(

I bought 10 GB Cameras at the Warner Bros. Store when they were closing out for $2 each :D that's $20 for ten GB Cameras. I also picked up an extra printer (in addition to my original one) for $6.

Hey, you wouldn't know if there is any way to get Gameboy Camera pics into a Mac with the Camera Link, would you? I've been trying to get them in my Mac using Virtual PC along with the Mad Catz link, but I couldn't find any way around the whole parallel printer port thing.

As far as I know, there's no way to use it on a Mac. You will probably have to use someone's PC to transfer the pics, then transfer them to your Mac.

@Ze_ro: They are very hard to find these days. There's one on eBay right now, though.

From the KLOV:

http://www.klov.com/...=S&game_id=9773

This disc will be handed out at retail stores when you pre-order Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, much as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time bonus disc was handed out when you pre-ordered The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

It's not exactly forbidden (like Jedi love), it's that all his vocal work is property of his estate and not Lucasfilm. Mucho $$ to use, so they always use a double now.

major Star Wars nerd here

Must preorder soon..... :jango:

To clarify, Guiness' estate doesn't actually own the vocal work. It's just that when the original Star Wars movies were made, few thought about the use of voice in a medium such as video games. Actor's contracts clearly specify what use the work being done will be put to and if it's not listed, it must be negotiated separately. One could say they "control" the vocal work, in a sense. So the original comment is more accurate. Guiness generally refused to negotiate the rights to his voice. Frankly, he hated Star Wars and resented the way it basically overshadowed his entire life.

Now if I remember correctly, the original arcade game used Guiness' actual voice. If so, that should make the transition to the GCN version.
