The new GTA Collectors Edition that just came out.. were the first games worth it?

I know the third is all cool and all with the 3D and stuff, but I've been wondering about the original GTA games that started it all. The top down ones.

I read a review of the DC version of GTA2 and they said it was hard to control the character since you HAD to use the control pad. Is it the same with the Play Station versions? Because I hated having to play Crash without a control stick. And I'd hate to have to use the D-Pad to play GTA games. I never played the older ones before. So I don't know the controls.

Gta2 used to be a great game {empasize on used to be} I would play it all day til my fingers grew numb. The only problem with it today is that it is very outdated and that makes it very hard to play knowing that gta3 and vice city squash it into nothingness, but hey thats just my opinion I could be wrong.

So, did it force you to use the control pad? That's all I want to know.

I will not buy it if I HAVE to use the damn D-Pad.

I NEED A CONTROL STICK!!! You know? D-Pads are so useless in modern games except as 4 extra inventory buttons or something. I hate that Shenmue made you use it to walk.

I think Rockstar Games offers GTA1 for free on their site. I tried it out and wasn't all that thrilled with it. I guess it was too slow for me. GTA2 was also a 2D top-down view game that didn't look all that great.

But I think they finally fixed all the nuisances with GTA3. That's about as perfect of a game as you can get.

Well, I like the top down view of GTA2. At least the version that was on the DC. It looked like Death Rally. A game I'd like to have seen ported to a console. But never did.

My question still stands. Is it a D-Pad game or a Control Stick game?

I recall playing GTA2 on my brothers PC and thinking it was pretty cool. I got the DC version and tried it out...And yeah the experience wasnt the same. It seemed harder to control on the DC and therefor wasnt as fun. It seemed pretty much the same as the 3D version, You took telephone calls that give you jobs to do, etc.... Its all top down tho. No 3d and not as deep as GTA3. Still worth giving a go.

i remember playing the first gta for hours apon a time.. i loved the slower freeform nature, but this was 1995ish after all, things change.. 6.7/10 on todays scale but a solid 8/10 back when it was one of a kind.. gta2 never had the same effects to me, too quasi-futuristic.

Death Rally was a great game! Kind of obscure I thought, but so much fun.

I actually got some e-mail from the guy who wrote the little prose blurbs that added a lot to the character of the game.

LANing that game at work is where I got my AIM name/alternate nick, "kirkjerk", which I'm slowly trying to make my name nickname online.

I HAD a copy of GTA and GTA2 for the PS but they were sadly stolen from my brother who was borrowing them. I also had GTA:London 1969...also stolen.

I like them both. I want to play them again and beat them.

I completed both the original GTA and the LONDON expansion pack on the PSX which used the D-PAD (no analogue sticks in them days) and I had no problems using the D-PAD on the original PSX controller. Great games by the way.

Never played GTA II on any format.

I have a problem with using the D-Pad on the PS. I can't stand it on any modern system, and I hate having to play games with it when it isn't necessary.
