Ok I know this is a gray area so I'll make this quick. Has anyone tried using those Swap Magic discs for the PS2 with a flip top case? How well do they work? The reason I ask is that I want to play Imports on my PS2 and I don't want to buy a $250 import console to play only a handful of games. I'm not interested in playing backups, just imports. Anyone have any experience using these?

They work extremely well. If you already have a gamshark then you dont need the magic disc. just chose to play game without codes and swap the disc then. if you're cheap like me there is always the knife or card trick which doesnt even require the flip top.
To answer your question straight, Yes it is good and shouldnt damage your machine.

There are also a myriad of mod chips... Swapping is bad for the system and the discs.

See this is what I'm worried about. I don't want to mod my PS2 because I'm afraid I'll break it and I'm afraid that new games (even US ones) won't work because they'll detect the chip. However I don't want to damage my PS2 through swapping disks if it isn't safe. What's so unsafe about it?

You'll fuck up the spindle, the motor, and scratch the discs.

See I assumed that the spindle stopped while you did this (like the DC Utopia disc). Why do they say it requires a mod chip then?
I guess I'll just have to get an import system then.

With the flip top you wont break anything like the spindle, laser or whatever, The discs stop spinning and basically nothing happens until you hit X. Mod chipping has a much higher ps2 failure rate then even the card trick. Its really up to how you treat the system with the flip top, In my case ive been shoving knives in since day one and havent caused any problem. The thing with NEW modchips is that they havent had a long enough period of testing and damage rate, like 1 or 2 years, look at the xbox,,,,,,

fliptop? card trick? knife trick? help me!!! if i ever get an import il just try the gameshark think, seems the easiest
