I got a week rental of the aforementioned(Thank you blockbuster and your new/longer rentals!), and i`m in love. I had my doubts at first, but all the nods to the classic series is making this game really cool, not to mention the great gameplay. But, i got a couple of questions. Seeing as these boards has the one and only MegaManFan himself, i figured this would be the place to ask. Ok, can you completely upgrade all three buster abilities? and second, how do you gain more boss chips?
This game is really surprisingly good. It is up there with Zero and X5 as one of the best new(er) MM games. Now if Capcom would only make a new classic series game...

I never really had time to get into this game. The difficulty level surprised me - most MM games are easy to get into and ramp up as you go, but this one was hard from jump. I bought a player's guide and still haven't done much with it. I find myself spending more time with the GB Player, as well as playing Mario Golf or Wario World. It's sad to say but it just doesn't grab me. Maybe after I'm done moving, I'll take more time to give it another go.

Heh. I remember how tough the very first one was. The first game I *really* felt satisfied with myself for plowing through...I really liked the styling the old school NES MegaMan games had.

I don't mind the difficulty of the original Mega Man. The only thing about it that ticks me off is that there's no password system, so you have to play the +entire+ thing start to finish.

after you beat FireMan and GutsMan, it gets much easier. It's really a good game though, as you progress you go back to levels suchs as gravity man's and iceman's. you should give it a shot though, you`ll like it once you get into it

Oh, I got into it alright, though that was when it first came out.

Now I'd be sure to play it with an emulator with save/restore state.

I guess I had forgotten how 'mean' those games could be...I mean, you can fairly easily get taken out by a monster at the begining of the board (in this case I'm thinking of those little "propeller beanie" guys at the start of one of the stages, forget which) if you didn't learn the patterns (and how to react to them) right quick!

That's something missing in today's 3D platformers. Heck, it's not even really there in Metroid Fusion...

Uhh, Gravity Man? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no Gravity Man until Mega Man 6.

Personally, I thought that was (by far) the most frustrating thing about NES games. Invariably, no matter where you died, you'd have to start over from the beginning. To this day, my brother still curses Nintendo whenever this happens in a game (even if the game is on a non-Nintendo system, made by a non-Nintendo company, and even though Nintendo wasn't the worst offender for this).

I can't count how many times I'd be right near the end of a level, with tons of health, then I'd accidentally brush against an enemy, and fall back into a pit and have to start over again. Castlevania and Megaman were really bad for this. At least Mario didn't get knocked back when he was hit, so you were still able to land your jumps.

I'm glad todays games are more forgiving... there are better ways of making a game difficult that don't involve so much frustration.

Yeah, I'm a gaming wuss so I don't mind the new paradigm, though some oldschoolers cry out for the lack of "challenge"

I didn't think Mega Man was so bad, especially once they introduced the passwords...the levels were compact enough that it wasn't too too burdensome. Never played Castlevania much. and Metroid avoided most forms of instadeath, though actually getting to your password in the original was kind of awkward, since you pretty much had to die, right?

That was one cool thing about Wonderboy III on SMS - any time you wanted the password, you could go in a certain door and get it right away without having to kill yourself off. I also accidentally discovered it could be used as a form of cheating. (1.) The password could only store certain information of your inventory as a power of 2, so it would tend to round up when you entered your last pw and (2.) Items reset each time you enter a pw, so you could go and collect the treasure chests and gems each time. I used the second part to access the hidden area on the other side of the pyramid for more gems so I could get enough that the shop owners were impressed to sell me all the items they had in stock.

man, i`m having a problem with making my posts clear lately. I was still talking about Network Transmission. yeah, I can see how completely idiotic it sounds now. But, i was meaning FireMan and GutsMan and GravityMan from NT. sorry for that
